Default Overpaid Stories

I’ve been teetering back and forth on whether I’m going to continue in the hobby, but I’ve decided that I would miss it to much if I stepped away. Just trying to figure out what direction to take the collection, but one thing for sure is a PC of one of my favorite Yankees, Roger Maris.

Anyway, this card popped up on eBay that I knew I had to have, and I also know I overpaid for it. I would’ve regretted it had it sold so I pulled the trigger. The serial number is the reason I couldn’t pass this one up as I feel this was THE card to get for this set.
Anyone else care to share a card they know they overpaid for, but didn’t want to miss out on buying it?

That card is worth every penny you paid for it.

Nice pick up!

Thanks guys! That’s the reason I couldn’t let it pass. I had to have this card because of the serial number.

You're happy with the card and that's all that matters. It's pretty effing sweet if I am going to be honest. Nice pickup!

As long as you landed a card for what you were willing to pay for it, you didn’t over pay unless you had the exact same copy available for less somewhere else.

This card has a unique serial number - so in a way, you set the new market price for the card. That doesn’t count as an overpay.

Sometimes we overpay for cards that may never come up again.

I overpay all of the time for things that I want and believe I may never get a chance at again. Most times I "overbid" I win, and some I don't. Either way, if you can afford, and you want it, then you didn't overpay. That card, numbered 61 yet, is not an overpay for your PC. I think you did well and should enjoy it!

What's an overpay to some may be a bargain to others for the right card my dude.

Recently I've overpaid for 4 heritage throwback variations. It started with the 2017 joe panik that I had been looking for since I got back into collecting and that sort of got me fixated on them. I think they're less attainable than the print run would indicate because so many are tied up in heritage master sets and are unlikely to come up for sale. Not to mention how many are sitting in monster boxes because somebody didn't take a magnifying glass to the variation code.

So, in short, I also overpay when I estimate the card just won't come up again anytime soon.

There’s really no such thing as an overpay for a card you want and acquire for a PC. Awesome card, congrats!

I echo the sentiment as others have said. I don't necessarily feel that when buying something unique that is for your collection there is really such a thing as 'overpaying'. If you are happy with the item then so what if you spent more than maybe it would have went for at auction?

I know I have posted this before but there was one final card I needed for my 2007 Sweet Spot Classic patch set. Not only was it the final card but it was the rarest one in the set. Been searching eBay for years and it never came up and suddenly one morning it was there. I bought it immediately for $400. I have no idea what it would have gone for if it went to auction but I didn't care. I could have made an offer on it but I might have lost out if someone else came in and bought it right away while I was waiting on a response. Years down the road are you really going to care if you spent a little more on the card than you think it truly was worth? Or will you be thinking about it and be like 'jeez I wish I had just bought that card when I had the chance'?

I completely agree with this statement. I've done this several times, but always for the PC, so I don't consider it overpaying.

Maybe “set a new market price” is a better term than “overpaid”.

I don't have an "overpaid" story but I do have a "should have overpaid" story. I collect Jim Edmonds rare inserts and numbered stuff. I had an opportunity to get a 1999 Fleer Brilliance 24K Gold about a year ago. The guy was too high on the price. I passed on it and have been looking for that card ever since. It's one of the only cards I do not have in my Edmonds collection. I have several of the Gold /99, but the 24k Gold has eluded me. I'd love to go back and buy the one from a year ago!!!

I’d much rather make a convincing offer right away for a unique item for my collection than miss out trying to save a few bucks.

For every card I’ve overpaid for I’ve also underpaid for a lot of them. I have over 50 1/1 and they have ranged from $10 to $300.

Careful how you speak around here there are clearly some heavy holders that attack whenever Trout's name is mentioned in the slightest negative.

I've read some crazy claims during arguments around here like he's better than Griffey and Willie Mays ever were, counting stats are not important WAR is everything, and he would have hit 100 HRs a season if he played in the 1960s. The crazy blind devotion to a guy who had some nice, but not legendary seasons when talent league wide was down and who has missed so many games is just baffling, so it must all come back to the concern over the forever falling card values...

I don’t follow the Trout market but objectively he is absolutely the greatest player of his generation. What he did in his 20s was every bit on the level of Mays, Griffey, etc. He’s been injured a lot in his 30s but so were many all time greats (Griffey, Mantle, etc ). His chances of finishing with an overall career as good as Mays is highly unlikely but he’ll definitely finish in the Griffey+ range. His counting stats will still be great by the time he’s done.

Well done. i have no idea what that goes for but it doesnt matter as its amazing

as many have said there really is no such thing as overpaying if its something you want to own

i think one of the things that we as collectors tend to ignore/forget/not know is the amount of TIME we spend hunting these things we want down. is (personal dollar amount here) really worth passing on something that we may have to hunt for another two, three, five, ten years? what if another copy never surfaces?

a collector can always work and make more money, but there are some cards that they may never even see yet alone own.
