I don't think this was a bad move for the Giants, they had made some moves this year adding renteria, howry, afflet and now RJ. I think with Tim L having mentors of RJ and Zito to help him and Cain out will benefit him long term. I think Noah Lowry will be left out of the rotation now, which is a plus for the giants at this point. RJ for 8 mil may be costly but you have to think for his road to 300 will bring in a good amount of people to the stadium so I think it will be a good move, I think he will end up with around 12 wins 10 losses about 175ks and a high 3 era.
The giants are quietly building a decent team - starting with pitching... but their hitting is awful still. However, if zito bounces back and they get a decent year out of rj, that rotation is pretty dominant. Also, when else besides the braves with maddux, smoltz and glav has there been a team with 3 cy young winners on it?

3 other rotations have had 3 Cy Young winners on them, but the only one I can remember is Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz. SportsCenter had a graphic on the others this morning.
Was one of the others Johnson/Clemens/x from the early 00s Yankees? |

1980 Orioles--Jim Palmer, Mike Flanagan and Steve Stone (this one I actually thought of on my own....wasn' exactly sure of the year, but knew the approximate time!) 1997 Indians--Bartolo Colon (hadn't won it yet), Orel Hershiser, Jack McDowell(not sure if that counts!!) 1981 Dodgers--Fernando Valenzuela, Bob Welch, Rick Sutcliffe (2 hadn't won it yet) 1978 Yankees--Catfish Hunter, Ron Guidry, Sparky Lyle (not a SP, but did win the CY in 1977.....is this the other "official" one?) Tired of looking, but these are some possibilities. |
