The Card That Got Away
In the film "Gone in 60 Seconds" Nicholas Cage plays a reformed car thief forced to get back into the business in order to save his younger brother from harm. Once having a reputation of being the best at his delinquent craft, there was one car Cage was never able to heist. For whatever reason despite his best efforts he never could score the 1967 Mustang Shelby GT which he gave the nickname "Eleanor". He gave female names to certain cars he had to steal, yet it was Eleanor which always eluded him. As far as my Football Card Collection goes I have found myself in a similar circumstance. Fortunately the hobby of Football card collecting is much less dangerous than the craft of a car thief. The similarity comes in the one that always got away. The card I could never land despite my greatest efforts. This card was the 1990 Pro Set Lombardi Hologram Card. Approximately 10,000 of these cards were produced and randomly inserted into packs of 1990 Series I. Now 20 years later I have yet to quench my craving. I have tried mind you. Over the years I probably opened about two cases of this product coming up empty every single time. There are likely a few reasons for my disappointment. It became relatively well known through the years that there existed some actual metal elements in the Lombardi Hologram card. When word spread, dealers and shop owners broke out the metal detectors and were able to dice through the cardboard for the diamond in the rough. With 10,000 of the Lombardi Hologram cards produced however you would think that several would have slipped through the cracks so that the average collector could experience a great pull. Perhaps this is easier said than done. While we are not sure exactly how many of the Pro Set Cards were made it is certain that they were massively over produced. There were lots of these cards to be found, yet they were buried in an astronomical sized haystack. I plan on purchasing this gem one day. I cannot rationalize continuing to dig through cases of cards. My money is best spent elsewhere. I do look forward to the day though when I can show off this card as part of my own personal collection. So what card is your Eleanor? The Card that got Away |

No way! You at least need to see it in person and negotiate a decent price.

Ebay wasn't around back then. Also I'm not about to purchase this card without seeing it in person first as they are prone to scratches. Haven't seen one at a show yet. Ideally I hope to find a nice one at Nationals.
