I skimmed this thread until I got to the post that needlessly interjected race into a discussion that has absolutely nothing to do with race. I couldn’t go any further after seeing that nonsense.

But it’s a shame that this hobby seems to be flooded with bad actors and altered cards. It’s why I can’t see myself ever getting back into the hobby in any kind of meaningful way. The grading companies are making too much money to care and unless things happen that will impact their bottom line I’m afraid this hobby is going to continue to have problems.

There must be a special trimming exemption fee being paid by some of these submitters. What do they do? Slip the graders ten or twenty grand and they get everything they want stabbed for the next several years, no matter how bad/small/trimmed/bleached/recolored it looks in the PSA holder? The next time I see Joe Orlando, I'll ask him if that's how it worked because there's no question he was the Bud Selig of third party grading.

I was going to write something like, "The most incompetent grader in the world could see that the left side of the 1960 Richard was amateurishly sliced off," but I'm not sure the PSA grader who reviewed it was even trying to filter out altered cards for that particular dealer. It's astounding that under Joe Orlando's "leadership," those dealers given the most favorable grades and the least scrutiny were the ones who were most likely to molest their cards.

Sadly for the hobby this is exactly what was going on. An absolutely massive quantity of altered cards in PSA, SGC and BVG/BGS holders have been identified here. The average submitter simply could not pull of submitting large quantities of altered material expecting for even some of them to get past the graders. This BS was established well before Orlando. He simply did nothing to try to stop it.

Must be that 80% of the cards in slabs sold by PWCC over the last 6-8 years have been altered at least once.

PWCC should continually be cited for this. What wonderful PR.

If you're talking about 1950s or 1960s Parkhurst hockey sold by PWCC or Probstein, that number is probably pretty accurate.

Makes sense. My sources tell me he was the type of guy who liked to "buy low", chop excessively, and then "sell high." It's not difficult to win registry awards (like he did for his vintage molested hockey sets) when PSA is giving you a blank check.

My sense is that the guy has never been the hard working type but the pay people to work hard for him type. We met prior to doing our deal in 2014 and set a date so that Miller could come into town and be part of the meeting. Got the impression that Katz would not know a 6 from an 8. I highly doubt he had the skills to slice a card let alone break open a holder.

That was a one and done deal because before 2 hours had passed after the deal he showed me what a massive low life he was by complaining that I charged him too much for the cards. I insisted on giving him a refund and coming to pick up the cards. I knew he was too arrogant and lazy to bring them back to me. He declined and reprimanded me and I made sure to let him know we would never do business again.
