Default Start PUMPING the Sosa and McGwire Cards!!!

On June 14, the network will feature “Long Gone Summer,” about McGwire and Sosa's quest to topple Roger Maris's single-season home run record in the summer of 1998. ESPN says it will include interviews with both McGwire, who has admitted his use of performance-enhancing drugs, and Sosa, who has never come clean.

Sosa's cards were punished much harshly by the market than those of anyone else involved in the Steroid Era. Maybe he'll see a modest bump in his rookie stuff. McGwire could see a more significant boost.

I'm always down for some cool Sosa cards. Just nothing crazy expensive, cause I'm poor.

I like to trade. Show me your Sammy's!

What’s considered Sosa’s true RC, 1989 with Donruss Baseballs Best or 1990 with Leaf/Bowman?

So I hope I'm not being insensitive here, but how did Sammy Sosa turn white? Did he bleach his skin? Or does he have some sort of disease? He honestly looks like a completely different person.

Time to dig up whatever I have.. It's only base cards, but I guess that's all it really takes nowadays

Some people get vitiligo, get self conscious about it, and bleach their skin to hide it a la Michael Jackson. But Sosa denies having vitiligo. It sounds like he's just a weird dude.

Was a fun player to watch though. And he's perfect to collect because he's in that sweet spot like my guy, Johan Santana, were he was a dominant player but not popular enough to have speculators inflate prices after they're retired.

Sosa's still one of my all time favorites.

3 60+ HR seasons, bombs onto Waveland Ave.

Saw him hit a HR both times I saw him play--one being a walkoff in the bottom of the 10th in 2004 against the Astros

I believe vitiligo,if not, I'd just say a mental issue.

Why is that? Because he was a very successful Hispanic ballplayer who morphed into a crazy white dude that wears pink suits in retirement?

“It’s a bleaching cream that I apply before going to bed and whitens my skin tone,” Sosa told Univision in 2009. “It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I’m not a racist, I live my life happily.”

Man I’ll never forget that summer. Walking into a card shop with stacks of McGwire 85 topps cards and walking out with a years worth of my college tuition paid for. Crazy times

Interestingly enough, Sosa is the proud owner of a few rookies with the toughest PSA 10 strike rates of the entire decade (I'm adding 1990 to the 1980s because that's what I collected as a kid so I included it in my research). I don't think any other player has more than one in the top-25.

Arthur

ETA: I just checked my spreadsheet and both Clemens and McGwire have multiple rookies in the top-25 so Sosa isn't the only one.

I think those 1999 Topps HR Chase cards might see a boost. I picked up a few on COMC to try and flip. I always loved those cards! Way out of my price range when I was younger but I have some of the main ones now. 1, 61, 62 and 70.

I don't usually laugh out loud at things when I'm alone but this one made me... Those pink suits are amazing.

Found some older cards and thought WTF happened to Sammy

I was going thru some old boxes a couple months ago and found stacks of those things. I sure hope they take off, I'd like to retire a day or two early!
