Default Suggestion for learning about stocks?

Not so much for trying to live off the stock market. I have a full time job. My employer matches my retirement. However, I don't know jack about how to read/interpret stocks and mutual funds.

Not asking anyone for specific stock advice or anything along those lines. I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend a website or a few good books on learning the basics of the market and on mutual funds.

Gimme a few moments. I will get you the name of the book I use a reference point to evaluate stocks.

To start this might help. However, I have always taken you to be very intelligent so I think this would be beneath your level of understanding.

Thanks a lot. I sent you a PM, hopefully not too long winded. I live across the street from a Barnes & Noble. I will probably pick up at least one of those books to get started researching this week.

I can give you my intro to investments text book after my class is done in December. Just cover shipping.
Used to be a Finance major but switching to Human Resource Management, so I don't need the book.
Just drop me a pm then.

Just turned 29 and gave my uncle in finance a call about this exact thing. He gave me:

1. The Intelligent Investor

2. The Behavior Gap

I'm almost to Thanksgiving break and I'll be able to start going through them.

Take a class at your local College. I took a stock and bonds investment in College and it was the best class I took.

Oil might be a decent long term play. I don't like it but many do. Gold? In a bad economy there are few greater investments than gold. I just don't like to hedge and hope for unemployment.

I turned 26 back in August. My retirement is going into mutual funds. I am just one of these people that can't stand the idea of not knowing what is going on with my money. I don't like the mindset of "let them handle it. I don't know what any of it means".

I'm not taking any classes right now, but the next step education wise is for my doctorate. I plan on going back to CRNA school once I get the required experience and certifications. I won't have any chance to take a class. I may look into an online class situation though.

I'm going to suggest a more general "money information" type approach not necessarily just stocks.

Planet Money : NPR

Dave Ramsey - only for his advice on managing debt. I do not like his "preachy" approach nor do I really like his investment suggestions. He is however REALLY good at helping with managing debt.

Money Management and Personal Finance | The Dough Roller
I've been a big fan of Rob Berger's Dough Roller podcast, he tends to dive deeper into things (and do math sometimes) to back up his philosophy.

Clark Howard is excellent as well.

Clark Howard on Demand - Free App for Android and Apple | Clark Howard

Marketplace Money
Freakonomics
Marketplace with Kai Ryssdal
Mad Fientist
Brian Preston, the money guy
Motley Fool podcasts (there's three)

I just find it much easier to listen to podcasts while I'm working

Khan Academy has a great finance and economics section for people just starting to pick up investing.

Rule #1. Don't buy a book.. visit your local library and check out a book. Plus you can browse current money magazines (Forbes, Kiplingers, etc...).

Don't let all the graphics on tv give you anxiety. Understanding the stock market and vocabulary is fairly simple.

Making money? totally different story.

This. By the time Kramer endorses, the market has spoken.
