My kung fu karate teacher doesn't charge me anything at his dojo. He just teaches me for free. He is more of a hero than many celebrities mentions in this topic.

JFK was the last generally beloved President. He was shot in the head.

I disagree.... This thread is making us all THINK..

We complain about the card companies but continue to buy their product..

This is not a "hobby" this is an avenue to fill addiction.

Men gamble, what is a better gamble then the thought of buying a $3.99 pack of cards hoping to get a $1000 card?

When a true hobby product comes out with NO inserts, just base it is only a 1 year product because it doesn't sell.

It is sad that a "prospect" rookie sells for more than a HOF rookie..

WOW!!

Though not intended (I hope) to be funny, it was. Dark humor I suppose.

eBay search shows..... 276 vs 1,589 is favor of the search titled. "George h W Bush Signed"...

Why do we (people in general) hold athletes in such high regards?

Whatever.. just a thought that came to me..
Derek Jeter never started a war over lies or destroy the US economy

WOW!!

Wow, let's throw out as many opinions about as many things as possible. An inability to focus on a particular issue negates any possibility of 'thinking'. It just turns into people blurting out predetermined stances on issues that are constantly changing. That's not thinking where I come from.

Eddie Harris said it best to Pedro Cerrano in Major League..."You trying to tell me that Jesus Christ can't hit a curve ball?" When Presidents start dropping bombs (pun intended), robbing home runs, and getting chicks like Kate Upton, then we'll pay more for their signature on a baseball.

Probably my all time favorite Dubya-ism. So entertaining.

To get back to the OP question, I think there are a ton of factors.

Musial was generally beloved and his autographs can be had for pennies on the dollar and he is deceased, which always bumps the value. Similarly aged deceased President Reagan's 8X10s go for about twice Musial's. Supply, popularity, living vs deceased all come into play.

I just think it speaks to the audience as well. Probably more sports collectors than presidential memorabilia collectors.

Admittedly I wasn't alive back then, but I don't think he was super beloved back then. I mean people look back at Clinton and love him, but there was a huge swath of people that loathed him while he was president.

As much as I dislike his politics, I think Reagan was the last generally beloved president.

WOW!!

I'd buy cards of the guys I like even if that meant I could never sell them. In fact a very small fraction of my collection is "for sale"

These collectibles have value simply because the buyer believes he can flip it for more money in the future- and you cannot deny it. How many times have people said, I got it because it will be worth more in the future.

When you are deciding between spending $200 for an auto baseball versus $200 to feed your family for the month, it's a no brainier.
I don't expect to flip my PC. And I also wouldn't expect collecting a presidential card or having a president to help Africa. The president helps with his own cause just or not and Africa is last on the list even behind poverty and all the negatives in america. Whether or not its a waste. It is disgusting what we spend money on but hey at least we don't snort coke.

Mike trout and co have 1 of a kind talents. Politicians aren't talented other then ass kiss in and lying. Pretty common.

pro athletes are generating their salary via what they do...if you want to go pay to buy a ticket to watch a teacher teach or firemen fight fire and help make it popular entertainment to draw in all of those advertising dollars then get on it

Yes, and you were born with the right to receive a basic education and protection from a blaze. You should be glad you weren't born in rural Africa.

Like everything else, it's supply and demand. Pretty much anyone that wants to can be one of those.

WOW!!

Yeah, but the hobby 'addiction' you're referring to for many is supporting and finding ways to make cards at least temporarily expensive, the baseball connection being almost purely incidental and the collecting aspect non-existent. It's a model not built for the long-term.

Hate to sound stodgy, but... these things self-correct over time one way or another.

That is the one thing in this hobby I will never understand. Why on earth do people pay more for players that haven't proved anything in the majors over someone that has proven themselves to be one of the best ever? But then again it seems like more and more things in our crazy world end up backwards everyday.
