If you feel healthy, productive, and able to complete all your daily requirements at 153 then that is probably a good weight for you.

The same thing could be said about weighing 175 lbs though. That Dr. very well may be a hack, but 5'8" 175 doesn't strike me as a totally ridiculous weight. For reference, my bmi has me listed as overweight (6' 195lbs) but I consider myself to be a relatively fit individual. Everyone is different though, that's the cool part.
153 is perfect for me, anything from 150 to 155 .

What was his justification for the 175 lb valuation?

Good Thread.

For me it just hit me this week. Had off Monday and Tuesday. Won't make excuses but probably the most stressful 12-15 weeks of my life with probably another 10-12 stressful weeks ahead. Relocated our main home from Central PA to Central NY, Terminally ill grandfather, job promotion, and to cap it all of, diagnosed hernia, with hernia surgery on the docket for Mid March, a week after I present at the biggest conference in my field. All of that meant, lots of time on the road, not eating well, and not being able to do to much at a gym due to a hernia. Now I'm not a slob, 6-1 225--but that's not healthy and not being in the gym for the better part of three months I know my lifts are way down just by the weight I am moving on my garage bench, this is my all time high for weight for me and probably low strength mark for the past 3-5 years. Haven't looked good, haven't felt well, haven't been as mentally alert, so it was time especially with surgery and recovery on the horizon. I cleaned up my diet this week big time. Now what works for me, may not work for you. But I just throw all the junk food out. I go heavy on chickens, turkey, fish etc. Soft Drinks are not an option, and quiet frankly I try to avoid beer which is very tough with my occupation requiring me to take people out--I still ended up having about 5 total this week. I load up on water and supplements. Mix some shakes in as well. Down about 4 lbs first week which is mostly water...but have been cleared by the surgeon to do some higher intensity cardio until the surgery so I will be starting that tomorrow.

Good Luck to all those trying to cut a few lbs. If your confident in your ability to cut weight, there are a couple good aps out there where you can bet on yourself to lose wait and normally get a 20-30% ROI.

I was 209 about 3 years ago right before we went to Orlando for 2 weeks. I haven't been back there since, but I just lost 6 pounds this week and am on my way again. First goal is 200. I might go for 185 after that which is what I used to be when I was in the Navy.

Last year I dropped 70lbs from 260 lbs down to 190 in about 6 months. All done with change in diet and counting calories. I am hitting the gym pretty hard now 3 days a week to build muscle. Ive maintained at 190 since October with a couple dips down to around 185. Ill probably stay at 190 as Ill be building muscle but still have some fat to burn as well. There is a lot of weight lifting I cant do as IVe had 3 back surgeries and a 3 level fusion but Im doing what I can. Ive gone from size 40 pants to size 34, XXL shirts to L.

I just had a switch flip in my head and I made the decision to lose the weight. I allowed myself one day a week to eat what I wanted and the rest of the time I kept to my calorie and macro goals. I had been eating out a whole lot and stopped that. I stopped drinking calores(cokes, sweet tea, etc) and switched to plain water or water with zero calorie mio in it. Eating lots of protein helps you feel full. If I did end up going over my calorie limit on a given day, I didn't let it bother me and got right back to staying with my goals the next day. I feel much healthier now.

I ended up down about 10 pounds for 2019. I was down nearly 20 at one point but put some back on due to having way too much stress in my life. The weight I am at now is the weight I carried for many years.

I just had retina reattachment surgery this past week and have to be mostly sedentary for a few weeks. When I had my other one done in 2017, I lost weight because I was usually not hungry due to my inactivity. I see that happening again. My goal is to try to keep off some of the weight I lose over the next few weeks.

I ended 2019 going from 265 to 195.

Now I plan on getting to 180 by increasing exercise program and lifting weights.

In 2020 I am down to 191.

That is awesome!! Great job!!

I am at 5 9 and 176. Hit the 180 mark last year at one point at didn't like it. My goal is to break 170 and lower blood pressure. Lack of exercise is my biggest hole. I have changed eating habits slowly. This thread is getting me motivated to get off my arse and get moving. I know once it becomes routine, it isn't a big deal. It is those first few weeks that are hard.

Couple of weeks ago I went to this new Dr. and he told me I should be 175 lbs, I basically laughed in his face and told him no way. At that weight my BMI would be 26.6, needless to say I'm not going back to that clown.
I was 196 lbs back in the early 90's.
That’s crazy. That lunatic probably got his Dr. at a medical school.

For me, it starts with exercise. When I'm exercising regularly (3X weekly works for me), I *want* to eat in a healthy way. I'm more able to resist junk food, because it seems like a sin to put over-processed foods into the body I've worked hard to get into shape.

Everyone starts with good intentions to exercise, but almost all are unable to follow through consistently -- and after a while, they don't follow through at all. That's natural; there has to be a strong pull to make you go to the gym for a workout (or even out the door for a run/walk), and there are a thousand excuses from which to choose as the reason *not* to work out on a given day.

Here's the trick that works for me, and I'll bet it will work for some of you, too. TAKE AN EXERCISE /P.E. CLASS AT YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Not only are there many to choose from (running, boot camp, tennis, basketball, etc.), not only are they cheaper than most gym classes (mine in the SF Bay Area are FREE), but in these classes you can create a community of like-minded folks who you expect to see each class, and who expect to see you. For me, that's the effective pull, the only thing that's ever worked for me in creating a consistent exercise regimen, and it's been very effective. I've taken a PE class for nine of the last ten semesters, and I feel as healthy and strong as I've ever been. Think you're too old for Community College? I'm in my 50s, and in my classes the ages typically range from 18 to mid-70s.

Give it a try!

I was home alone and didn't really know what was going on....thought it might just be heart burn but I really had no clue since I have never had anything like this prior. My wife was out of town so I called her and she tried to convince me to go to the ER. The pain was going away so I still thought probably heart burn, but I had to go to the post office to mail off some eBay packages and I told myself that if there was still any pain I would go to the PO and than the ER. So, that is what I did.....they took me right in, bypassed a few people in the ER who looked much worse off than I felt....anyway.....diagnosed with a heart attack and admitted me to the hospital. It was determined that my heart was working at 40%, multiple block arteries, and the damage was permanent. Released 4 days later after stents were implanted and started rehab....finished rehab after 8 weeks(that is all insurance would cover), and joined a gym. Started my own exercise routine.....3 days a week I go to the gym, work about for about 1 hour and swim for another 20 minutes, and the other 4 days I take one of our dogs on about a 3 mile walk....I have given up all soft drinks, only eat beef about 3 times a month, and I have eaten more chicken and turkey than I did in my previous 64 years.

I have lost about 40 pounds in the past year.....I have gone from an A1C of 13 down to under 7....which means I have almost beat diabetes. In my next visit to the cardiologist I am hoping, almost expecting, that they will tell me that my heart function is up from 40%, that the damage to my heart wasn't as permanent as initially diagnosed, and that I can get off of a few of the 6 pills I have to take daily.

Have been told that 1/3 of all first heart attacks are fatal....at least I was on the good side of those odds.

Sorry for the long read

Bottom line....nobody is guaranteed tomorrow, be proactive and fix what you can today to have a better chance of seeing tomorrow.
Above was my answer to this question last year. Current progress, or digress, after about 12 months:

My last doctor visit showed my A1C was back up over 7....7.1 to be exact....so I've been screwing up on the diet. I guess I'm addicted to chocolate and am having a hard to giving it up.

The visit also showed that the initial diagnosis of heart damage and 40% heart function was not as permanent as they thought.....I am now at 55% which is the low range of normal. I have continued the exercise program described above and have not missed a day in the past year. 7 days a week I do something.

So....for me it's just more work on the diet.....I'm 6'1" and weigh about 210....I want to lose another 10 pounds but I think the chocolate addiction is holding me back.

Bottom line is I realize I can take a day off if I want to, eat some M&Ms if I want to....I'm a grown ass man and can/will do whatever I want. The problem with taking a day off or sneaking a snack is that I'm only cheating myself and family when/if I do something I know is wrong. If I take one day off it's the beginning of the end. I just have to get the diet back under control and bury the chocolate monster in my head.

I could lose 10 pounds this week if I stopped drinking beer for a few days.

I workout a lot. I simply enjoy it.
I do intermittent fasting. I find it quite easy as I'm simply not hungry in the morning.

I have a crap diet and I drink a lot of beer.

Oh well.

Should be your epitaph

For real though, I have a friend who works out like a horse just so he can eat whatever he wants. I get it. Sort of.

I can't necessarily eat what I want, I'm too old for that these days, but the fasting helps.

If I workout everyday, which I generally do, and fast from 8:00-12:00 (except on weekends) I never fluctuate more than 3-5 pounds even if I eat burgers everyday.

I hover at 210, which I'm OK with because of my workouts (I only really lift so I'm not trying to be 150 pounds), but I could be at 200 by next Wednesday if I wanted to be. I'd just have to take a few days off of eating out.

I just love eating out.

FYI, if you struggle to lose weight even though you work out and eat healthy. Please do visit your doctor. Why? I was on a pretty extensive workout and diet plan, I plateaued about 20 pounds short of my goal. I #@#@#@#@ you not I was walking 2-3 miles a day, doing quite a bit of Yoga and stretching and free weights. My diet was oatmeal in the A.M., lunch was fruit and a low fat yogurt and a healthy sensible dinner. Zero snacking or junk and drinking water only, not very enjoyable if you enjoy food.

The point of all of this? I had quite a bit of blood work done and other tests and they found I had an adrenal deficiency and nearly zero thyroid function. They put me on a Synthroid and its been great ever since. Now I am over 40 so not a young buck anymore. Be checked by your doctor, ask questions etc.. Might help you get to your goals if your struggling though putting in the effort.
