Default 2020 Politics Thread - Enter At Your Own Risk - RULES IN OP

I cannot believe he tested positive Wednesday then still chose to go to fundraisers and tell no one. The level of irresponsibility is insane.

“About 48 hours ago the President received a special antibody directed against the virus.”

48 hours ago is ~12p Thursday.

Now they’re putting this out

BREAKING: “The president’s vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We’re still not on a clear path to a full recovery.”

--A source familiar with the President's health, to pool reporters

That last part shows the absolute disconnect so many have. 1600 a month, essentially, say you take home 1200-1300 after benefits and taxes. There isn’t a city in this country you can live off that. Even small towns with a 500 dollar rent it isn’t “easy.”

In Pittsburgh though...700 for rent, 150 for utilities. If you have a car, no chance at all. That leaves you 400-500 dollars for everything else...food, gas, and emergencies. That isn’t even close to feasible.

Frankly, telling someone they can “easily” live on ten dollars an hour is insulting, and since your furloughed why don’t you go ahead and get one of those jobs if it is so “easy.”

Sure it is. Let's say $1300 is the take home. And you live in Alabama.

- Rent is $550
- Power averages at $80
- Food is $200
- Gas is $50
- Car Insurance is $50

That leaves $370 a month for wants.

You shouldn't be working there forever, it's a stepping stone.

The unnamed source strikes again.

But if there is a timeline where Trump tested positive on Wednesday; he can kiss his election adios.

I think Alvarez does make a good point. I’m a fan of capitalism but not crony capitalism. For example, when the government picks winners and losers and bails out certain companies and institutions that’s crony capitalism. That’s the reason we had the whole housing market crash. Crony capitalism is just a stepping stone to socialism. The wage gap has been increasing and the middle class remains stagnant. I do think we are seriously due for some changes in the whole tax system.

The wage system too, minimum wage should be in the double digits. There's a lot of things that need to be fixed when it comes to that.

It's all a case-by-case basis. If I get laid off in a normal year, then I am going to maximize as much money as I can as I look for a job in my field. Like working in a field with tips. If I am looking for a career starting from the bottom, I am looking at a Wal-Mart type place.

Have you been in a Walmart ever? How many of the employees there looked like they were just doing this as a starter job?

I know four people who did the Wal-Mart route. Started 10-15 years ago and all make extremely good money now.

My wife's old coworker, at a bank, quit for a better opportunity at... Wal-Mart. She's 45ish?

IDK. I would find it very hard to believe that Trump would be traveling and hitting fundraisers w/ a Positive COVID test on the books. If word of that got out, his election chances would be zero. And for what, a fundraiser in NJ?

It's not reasonable. Especially if the WH doesn't want that timeline known; the doctors aren't going to blurt anything about the timeline out.

It will get straightened up shortly I presume.

Yes and who is that on if you choose to work at Walmart instead of getting more education or better job? Do you think anyone at Walmart could work their way up to management? I worked all of these min jobs in high school and college - MCD, grocery, JCP, UPS - etc and the 1 thing I learned from most the "lifers" as they called themselves is they were happy making x $$ and have no stress. Get my paycheck each friday and pay bills and extra $$ for whatever. Other people I worked with started out their and worked into management since that is what they want.

Ok, so 5 people you know did well, you must therefore know 1400 other people who are down in the dumps and can't afford to buy a Gatorade. Surely you can;t be perfect in knowing only success stories, if so, I'm glad to know you.

I’ve heard of the book. I’ll do some digging. I only started following politics ~ six months ago, so I have no idea who a lot of the popular authors and thinkers and such are. When this thread turned into a discussion on the Supreme Court I took a seat on the bench. “RGB who?” was my only thought. I’m certainly no expert on any of this, but try to keep it genuine and stay in my lane.

Well, keep in mind “extremely well” to him is $12.50 an hour...
