Default SGC grading... What is an "A"?

I thought SGC used numbers... What does it mean when there's no number and it's just the letter A? Has it been altered?

I wonder if they put that kind of information on the world wide web, in some format?

How would one go about searching for that?

Could be:
A for autograph authentic
A for card authentic
A for card altered.

Post a picture.

Enter your A cert# here

https://gosgc.com/auth-code

Example- 6200578

GRADE:
A

Huh? Lacking some info for sure.

I always though A was authentic. They slab the same "A" for altered?

SGC started adding Altered to Authentic labels recently.

Authentic but here’s what some won’t tell you. It’s probably altered cause that’s what they label altered cards.

I would hope that if I card is found Altered, that they'd either notify and ask if you still wanted it slabbed or simply return it as most places do. I'd be upset to have paid for a slab on an altered card if I hadn't known.

PSA does the same thing so does Beckett. It means it is a real card but has been altered.

They would still likely charge you PSA and other companies will charge you. You are paying for grading not necessarily the slap. Usually when PSA does not grade it is when the card is short but they do not suspect trimmed. They will charge if they think it is trimmed regardless of if they grade it authentic or send it back.

But don't PSA and BGS say Altered in the description or something like that? This just says.... "A" which is very open to interpretation, especially since I can't find any info about it on their webpage

PSA Authentic cards can be altered whether they say it or not. SGC started adding Altered tags to some Authentic cards when they switched to the new labels although I can't find any pictures, I'm pretty sure i've bid on some.
