I haven't checked what's currently listed to see what's real or not but lets just say they are all real. Just because the current ones listed are all real doesn't mean that fake ones don't pop up all the time. Just a few month ago Probstein alone had like 10 fake ones listed. A few months back someone on these boards bought a fake bag from a different seller and I was able to point it out to him and he ended up canceling the sale and saving himself tons of money. Trust me they are out there.

Also, are there any pics of fake bags so the OP can see what to look for? |

What are your husbands plans for this card? Is he planning on buying a bag opening it and getting the card graded? If that's the case he would probably be better off just buying the card already graded in the grade that he's looking for. If he's planning on keeping the card sealed in the bag then I would buy a ungraded bag. I say to buy the bag ungraded because you'll be paying a premium to buy it graded and the grade has nothing to do with the cards inside. Almost nothing, sometimes they will take the condition of the top card into account slightly when determining the grade. You could buy a bag that's graded a 9.5 open it and send the card in for grading and get a 6 or a 7 or whatever. Not only that but the way they stuff and cram the bags into those tight holders can damage both the bag and the cards over time. If you find a nice bag just make sure it's real buy posting pics on these boards and letting some Star experts give there opinions. And when I say experts I don't mean me. I know a good amount about Star cards but I'm far from a expert. But there are a few members on these boards that are true Star card experts and can really help you out. |

I guess there are a lot of new people that like star suddenly now that the prices are on the rise. The best thing you can do is go to this website and absorb the information for yourself and refer back to it when you need it. The amount of misinformation that gets repeated without any evidence here and in other forums is astounding.
www.basketballgold.com The person that made this knows more about this product than the rest of us put together. No, schonco was not the help they had to start grading the cards. That was an original dealer and someone that still deals with them, Steve Taft. He trained them, SCD, and GAI which were both great at grading star. Not what GAI became toward the end but the original. As for the people that hang their hat on psa telling them what is and is not ok to collect, keep doing that. And when psa gives them their blessing go out and pay 5x for the same cards you could buy now and talk about how you've always liked them. PSA says they don't grade trimmed cards too and that's clearly wrong. Educate yourselves and quit thinking this entity of other "people" has your interest at heart. PSA is not a supernatural being. You can quickly learn more about star than they know. Might take you a week. Try it. Knowledge is fun. |

There is clearly a bias against Star cards by certain people for some reason and I just don't get it. Ultimately the market will decide and I'd be willing to bet almost anything that collectors will decide they are criminally undervalued. Recent sales are already starting to show that they're getting their due.

I've really enjoyed this discussion so far. 80s Star basketball is bound to catch-on, as collectors following the hype behind his '86 Fleer realize there are other early Jordan cards. As these "collectors" become more educated - and I highly recommend reading up on Star Co. before spending big money, they will realize these are important basketball releases. There was a massive gap in NBA cards from 1981-82 Topps to 1986 Fleer, and Star is your key to bridging that gap.

Seems like the Star 117 is catching on. Love that card and it pre dates the Fleer!

I was checking the recent sales for Star Jordan and I came cross a 86 Star Best of the New/Old Olajuwon BGS 9.5 sold for near 1k. Does the card worth the price it sold?

Always preferred Star Jordan XRC because it's the first official Jordan pro card. It may be a heretical view, but I'm just not a fan of 86 Fleer in terms of design.

thanks guys for all the info. I think we are going to buy graded as it is too much of a gamble with the bags. Is there a big price difference between these 2? Is it worth it to play a little more for the higher grade?

The population for 84 Star 101:
9.5 x 3; 9 x 68; 8.5 x 237; 8 x 231; 7.5 x 179; 7 x 87; Total graded 902; From the population report, you can see both 7.5 and 7 are below average, so I would pick the cheaper one if the price difference within 2k. |

So if there is less than 2K difference, go with the higher grade. If its more than 2k go with the lower grade?

There's going to be more than a 10% difference in sale price between a 7 and an 8 by the time those auctions end. Guaranteed.

With only ~902 Jordan Star 101's and some in the bags still, this will be a million dollar card... Of course missed the boat but maybe can get a lower end card... who knows

Years ago I remember one of the members here told me to buy the highest grade I can afford when purchasing 80s Jordan cards. Today, I really thank for his advise.
