I think its fun to think outside of the box and find the new things. I was on vintage and the Marvel comic cards well before almost anyone (in the sports cards only hobby). Bought and sold original PSA 10 Nintendo cards late last year. Go see what those are going for, if you can find them. Made a little money. But had a ton of fun finding all the old stuff. Sure its getting hard to find the new, next thing...but I also try not to overthink it either. Its all a giant circle. You don't have to outthink everyone, all the time. But definitely don't force yourself to do it. It becomes "work" vs having fun.

It's getting harder to find value because everyone keeps galaxy braining themselves into buying anything and everything.

I did find some value in vintage boxing recently, but that seems to be on a serious uptick.

I bought 2 boxes of The Simpsons 1990 cards a the end of January because there's basically none graded and I want to add the stickers to my son's collection. I just looked and they have more than tripled in price since then.

I also made a low risk move into buying some OBJ. Picked up a few nice pieces for super cheap but also got a BGS 9.5 Topps Chrome Red RC auto /5 for under $400. The football market has its limits, WR's don't sell incredibly well -- but there was a period where this guy was every kids favorite player. He will probably see a pop if/when he gets traded or when he comes back healthy and puts up numbers...or in 15 years when people are getting nostalgic about how good he was.

I would say there are still a million deals for original 1977 Topps Star Wars as they had 5 different series...it is exploding but soooo many low prices still
-***ONLY get ones in good shape unless Series 1-8 cards (minus Tarkin who is shite)....can still make a killing grading raws as this market is still young thus a lot of newbs posting

-2009 Topps UFC Round 1 outside top 5 names
-2010 Leaf MMA rookies....bunch of rookies including Brittney Palmer and her autos (of Topps Project 70 fame)
-1967 Star Trek originals.....1st ever made
-1969 Planet of the Apes originals.....1st ever made
-1964 Donruss Marvel originals.....1st ever made
-1954 Bowman football....collect the PSA of the HoF and big names like Gifford...very affordable still

I could go on and on......this took me months of constant researching, searching, parsing Sold data, looking for upcoming stimulant news that could positively affect the sets, etc. Not easy and time consuming but happy to share some

Soccer is virtually untapped yet..aside from the messi and ronaldo rookies which are unaffordable already, there is tons of potential and room to grow.It is the fastest growing market that will dwarf basketball in 5-10 years. If this wave of investers/flippers/collectors simultaneously come in to the soccer market all at once there is not enough supply of soccer cards printed in comparison to any other sport over the years.

True. I dabbled a bit in thoroughbred horseracing cards. They are pre-1940, yay! I think the artwork is stunning.

There's more out there.

Obviously football and basketball rookies are instant impacts and that is why there stuff is priced that way. Baseball is harder because even the best players spend a couple of years in the minors.

As far as the OP’s dilemma. I find myself in the same boat and I am focusing on completing lower end projects to get them out of the way and then I am buying stuff for me. If the market has a big correction in the future at least I will be holding cards that I can enjoy.

Trout and that's it.

Vintage baseball was always hot that never changes.

Personally, I took out a second mortgage to invest in mascot cards. Mascots are becoming rarer due to COVID so I can see this Clutch rookie card going for thousands in the next few weeks.

Any reason why the 1931 Wills is considered the RC?

I love these! I've been finding little vintage ad cards, some real weird and whimsical stuff out there and cheap too. Nice reprieve from the stratospheric bball prices (even though I'm still buying some stuff in that arena).

I think its easier for people to understand & to find. The '31 Wills is an American issued card. Has Mickey and Walt on it, etc. The 1930 set was released overseas only and the wording is not in English.

Create your own market. Buy a card, go into that player thread and say that card is overpriced and wait for all the big players to say “it’s underpriced”. This will cause a lot of people to go search that card and hopefully drive up prices. Sell into that upswing.

With vintage running up so much I find it a lot harder to figure out my next move. Naturally I can see the argument to go into modern stars that should have good playoff runs like Harden, KD etc. I can see the argument to go into Zion as well.

Part of me is wondering if its actually in another sport like Baseball. I just can't see value in BB anymore like I could.

Is anyone else having a hard time figuring out their next move? I'm thinking about consolidating into one mega card as well.
I've been majorly consolidating the past 3-4 months and bought some huge cards with a couple more to go.

I just buy whatever hasn’t been talked about in three months. Whispers eventually become louder until that particular bubble bursts. Rinse and repeat. Zion comes to mind right now. Boring but effective.

I've noticed many people in this hobby are now looking for the next big thing more then ever before. The basketball card market aswell as other sports had a huge hype this past year, mainstream attention, big names getting involved, record sales, thousands of flippers/investors jumping on the hype train and seemed like for the past year prices have only gone up... but as of recenty I am noticing a cool down period and some prices falling.

I've noticed many people gambling on the next big thing to blow up , wrestling cards, marvel cards , tv show cards, WNBA cards , f1/racecar cards and tons more , there's just sooo much speculation now its crazy, I dont think this is the best time to invest in cards, prices are crazy inflated because of the recent hype, many people are outpriced of the market so they are looking for the next cheap hidden gems, the problem is that thousands of others are looking for those cheap hidden gems and are investing alot in them in hopes they blow up. I just dont think buying to invest NOW is a good option. I look at the WNBA, the league has not turned a profit in all their 20+ years , the stadium seats were empty pre covid and they only survived because the NBA would give them 10+ million dollars just to get by , I read online how the NBA might stop funding the millions of dollars each year just so the WNBA can get by, they never turned a profit and its a bad investment for the NBA, they might even sell the league. And still I see posts on instagram where some WNBA players cards are selling for more then a Michael Jordan auto in his college uniform, I saw plenty of WNBA cards sell for thousands of dollars, I cannot understand that if the league is struggling in many ways.
I see alot of investors buying smaller sports cards that are not the big 4 (NBA NHL MLB NFL) , like racecar cards, rugby mma golf tennis , these sports may be popular and played by millions but they just dont have a card market with their viewers. Cards have been part of the big 4 sports for many years they go hand in hand, those other sports never had a card market because there wasnt a market for them. I dont know if people are thinking tennis or rugby cards are be as valuable as basketball or baseball cards, I cant see that happening.

I just think we are in these weird speculation phase in the hobby where many people feel they missed out on pokemon or bitcoin that they are looking around for the next hidden gem, the problem is that its not guaranteed there will be a next big thing to blow up, and any of these hypes/ big rise in prices does happen it doesnt feel natural at all, it feels like its all done from pumping & dumping. Gary V can make a post on instagram about Beanie Babies and I promise you they will blow up over night and everyone will start investing in them, the problem with these pump & dump hypes is that they dont last long , there's no real interest/passion and prices will tank fast .

OP I understand how you feel , I to have been looking around everywhere to find a good hidden gem to invest in but I just dont see it, the prices are too inflated , there's way too many speculators , the market is saturated with way too many newcomers who are just trying to make a quick buck and when the card hype dies down these people will be out and jumping on the next hype. I kinda feel like the card market is reaching its peak and things will start declining soon, the top 1% of cards will always be in high demand and setting new record sales but the rest of the 99% will fall. Just a year ago you could buy decent cards for a good price and it would be a good long term investment but nowadays crap bottom of the barrel cards seem like the only affordable cheap options out there. I still cannot understand how people are buying mass produced Non auto Unnumbered Non patch prizm BASE cards that are graded 9 or 10, I cannot wrap my head around it. A psa 10 is impressive for a 50-70 year old card but not for a modern 2020 mass produced card.

Anywho thats just my thoughts on th current state in the hobby, I dont think this is the best time to buy cards for long term investments and finding any cheap hidden gems nearly impossible at this time.
