Yes... I try to get that info without sounding like a jerk .... I’ll say something conversationally like “hey, did you hear that PSA shut down for a while? I haven’t graded any cards for a long time - how about you?”

They will typically let me know - I’m a collector just like them, so I do what I can to find out info kinda’ delicately. Not once has anyone called me rude or insulting

Haha! No offense. I'm just laughing at myself for having a stack of cards that I bought over the last few months that are now basically garbage.

And there is a ton of stuff that is better than hamburger. We've also got a place called The Chuckbox that is just top notch for that type of burger and cheap too.

There’s an art to buying raw cards on ebay. Obviously the higher the value the more you scrutinize and ask questions. If you do your diligence you can almost without fail avoid cards that grade poorly. Mostly through reviewing pics and asking questions.

The kind of underrated component for me is what i look for in a seller. I will basically never buy raw from one of the big consignors like DC (not picking on them, they just came to mind), as those cards have been through too many hands to have many gems still floating around. Every time i’ve done it i’ve received cards with print lines, scratches etc.

Also typically will shy away from someone with really high feedback like thousands and thousands of history. experience has generally been that those cards have flaws and are being sold raw for a reason. the seller knows he’s letting a card go that won’t gem, he’s a vet.

My best experiences tend to be with guys with just maybe less than 500 feedback. they are part timers typically and looking to flip a card they pulled. not graders typically.

I know there are guys here that are high feedback and aren’t graders so they still sell gem cards sometimes, there are exceptions to every rule, but that’s been my experience as someone who used to buy a lot of raw to grade before the shutdown.

I mostly crack vintage to get them signed but those new PSA slabs are no joke...I botched an Eric Davis rookie recently, could've been so much worse but that put the fear of god in me...now I try to buy SGC if I know I'm going to crack it. Cracking an SGC slab is like opening a Ziploc bag.

i could be on the decline because nobody can get things graded and make real money off their investment purchases. Also i see most aren't able to get a decent grade on their cards either.

The decline helps though because it has booted a couple people from the hobby. I really hope it levels the card grading company playing field where you don't just have to go to PSA

Same question essentially but #2 doesn't assume that everyone thinks its better in a slab?
To actually be offended personally by anything card related isn't how I'm wired but clearly there is enough passion by those in both staunch camps that using delicate phrasing sometimes results in an easier deal.

I don't really have a place in this discussion other than to say the proliferation of grading ultra modern cards doesn't mean that everyone participates in it. For some people, the slabs are an integral part of their collection or business. I can respect that.
For others, it's get off my lawn you slabhead.
Some of us also grade sparingly. It doesn't mean the ungraded we are selling has been cherry picked - just haven't been volume graders. Other times we buy already graded to flip so a listing like that amongst others ungraded could be seen as cherry picking the ungraded but is not the case. People have personal collections and decide they found a better version or funds for something else and so sell their graded. I can probably think of more reasons why you will see a mix of graded and ungraded in a seller's listings but will stop there.

I would not deal with a buyer with all of these questions. I'm not saying they can't try to get all of the details they want. I just won't respond to it and they can get their card from someone else. Not offended - hate my time being wasted though.

The answer for me is simple.. I don't grade cards so I wouldn't know.

And as a buyer with potential questions, I have moved on to other sales if they’re not answered. I also hate my time being wasted, and agree - it’s nothing personal.

I have found that buying high grade raw with the intent to grade, triggers info requests that not all sellers want to or need to deal with. On these transactions, especially $500+, the card has to be right, and the rapport between buyer and seller has to be right, for things to go smoothly.

Anytime I get those questions, I just say "it probably won't gem IMO, but I am not a grader." That seems to help out a bit

For a buyer like Me, that would be a desirable, good response

What's the last $500+ raw card you bought that is older than 2019.
