Default Anybody have or know where to Find 1945 Pacific Coast League cards

I am on a mission to find a single cards of Gerald ( Jerry ) Womack he only played for the Pacific Coast League Padres for 1 year 1945. He is my Wifes Father. Before he died several years back he told me he was on some cards back in the day that he used to have. I want to find one for My wife. I have looked everywhere for a couple of years and cant seem to find any. I am hoping someone on here might know more or where to track one down. I would greatly appreciate it and would gladly pay for one. I know he did not have a spectacular baseball career but was one hell of a father and father in law. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Default Womack

I haven't been able to find any cards, but there are probably some out there.

He pitched 10 games for San Diego PCL in 1945. He also played for Tucson in the Southwest International League in 1951 and for Porterville SWIL in 1952.

Here is a repro photo of the 1945 San Diego PCL team. Jerry is in that photo.

I have nothing to contribute other than I hope you're able to find one. That's super cool and something your family definitely should have.

A buddy of mine is related to old player named Johnny Dickshot who never had a card when he played, but got one in one of those 90's megacard sets that says 'first card' on it. He has it on display at his house. Cool conversation piece and not just because of the name.

There are several Dickshot items on eBay. Autographs, photo's, programs, etc.
He was in the majors for 6 years, so you would think there would be a card somewhere along the line.

Yeah. I've thought about buying a slabbed auto as a gift for my friend. He played from 1936 - 1945. After the Goudey sets. Before leaf, bowman and topps. Right in that deadzone.

If there is something, we don't know about it.

This is the one my friend has. It says 'first card' on it. So, if there is something out there it's pretty obscure.

Is it possible that he played in 1951-52 as well? Baseball Reference has a Jerry Womack who played for the Padres in 1945 and then Tuscon of the Southwest International League and Portersville of the Southwest International League in 1952.

Here is what looks like it could be a Portersville Comets hat from 1952: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223892984819

I checked with a friend of mine that is, along with a couple of his friends, experts on PCL and that era cards. He said (some of this is already mentioned by others here):

Thanks for your note. I checked out Jerry Womack and have some info for you..

1) The Beckett alphabetic checklist notes two players with the last name of Womack ; Dooley (1966-1969, 1981,1992) and Tony (1991-1999). No listing of Gerald / Jerry is present.

2) In 1945 there were few sets of baseball cards produced. One of the war restrictions was frivolous use of paper. The only set produced in the PCL that year was of the Seattle Rainiers. The San Diego Padres did not produce cards that year.

3) Womack's record in professional baseball (according to baseballreference.com) was 3 seasons in baseball ; 1945 San Diego Padres (PCL). He played 13 games as pitcher, 2B and shortstop and had a lifetime PCL batting average of .250.

In 1951 he played for Tucson in the low minors (C Ball) a total of 11 games, and in 1952 finished with Porterville (C Ball) with 17 games.

It is very uncommon to have cards produced for players in the low minors. I've never seen any card sets identified as being associated with those teams, or that league (Southwest International League) during the 1940's or 1950's.

What the family will have to look for are programs / scorecards with pre-printed rosters that list him, or press / publicity photos that were taken in the day. The lower minor leagues generally do not have pre-printed rosters in their scorecards, rather a mimeographed sheet of paper with the day's lineups. The 1945 Padres (home and road) programs will likely be their best bet.

Unless the family produced the cards themselves, it is unlikely that any cards were ever produced of him, especially considering the limited play he actually had.
