So Trout gets MVPs because it’s his personal best season… even if several other players are having even better and more valuable years, helping their teams deliver playoff berths???

This is the challenge w/Trout… his MVPs come without deserving performance. It’s kind of weird

It's anybody's race based on the second half. Judge being both a Yankee and leading the HR leaderboard by such a wide margin gives him the edge for now.

1 Manny Machado Padres 3B 285 4.3 4.3
2 Rafael Devers Red Sox 3B 303 4.2 4.2
3 Aaron Judge Yankees RF/CF303 4.0 4.0
4 Mike Trout Angels CF 266 3.9 3.9
5 Jose Ramirez Guardians 3B 281 3.8 3.8
nobody is talking about Machado or Devers...it's ALL RISE...it's Judge by a long shot right now.

still a lot of baseball to go though, so we'll see.

I'd go as far as to say that Machado has a 0.0% chance of winning A.L. MVP

Ugh… that’s the worst - I find the after cards go for more $$… my bidding strategy is always more aggressive on the first of two cards, and I almost always get a discount, sometimes pretty significant

Same thing happens in fantasy baseball/football. The first player called usually goes for a discount. The last of any given tier goes for a huge premium.

I doubt anyone is playing games. That guy wanted to end his auction at a particular day and time. I doubt he paid any attention to your card. If he did he would have waited a day or two or week to have his end. While his might go for more than yours, they will probably both go for less than they would have if there were only one available.

Absolutely. If season ended today... Judge may win by a slim margin. Although I think Trout will be able to keep up his current pace better than Judge, so imo by season's end Trout has a better chance.

I was just responding to your comment about Trout's stats not being awesome this year... when in fact they are. I think the MVP should go to the player who is the best (aka best stat line, which is always debatable in a tight race). Right now the race is tight, and I love it. I would also love to see Devers win it, but it's going to be very tough. I think him being 4th right now is accurate. But remember, I just some dude sitting in his mom's basement who's opinion holds no weight I also think Ohtani will surge up the list as the season goes on.

Anyway, back to Devers!

I think I get your point now: of that crew, Trout is most likely to continue performing (as he always does).

Your comment was where things fall end of season, as opposed to right now.

Hard to argue that Devers or Judge have proven they can remain consistent for a whole year. Devers has had halves of years that are stellar over and over (every year since 2019, in fact)… but also months or more where he was scuffling. And Judge usually heads for the IL for months at a time.

Hopefully all are Trout level consistent going forward

Unfortunately I don’t have ready access to our cards any longer, otherwise I’d check

Can get Devers for MVP at +1500 at some sportsbooks. Definitely worth a few bucks, in my humble opinion

BTW I finally was able to check out Trout's season... maybe I'm missing it...

Looks like:
-- BB% - worst season of his career
-- K% - worst season of his career
-- BA - 2nd worst season of his career
-- OBP - tied (w/2020) for 2nd worst season of his career
-- the only thing he's doing well is pacing for near career best HR... although his xHR suggest he's had luck there

OPS+ 2nd highest of his career, behind only his injury riddled 2021.

Driven by SLG, which is much less valuable than points of OBP… his lower OBP is more than reducing the value of the higher SLG so far

And his higher SLG is mostly driven by more HR than the past. And his xHR suggest he’s had 2-3 more than you’d anticipate given their quality. So he’s gotten a bit lucky to deliver the SLG that he has.

Highest wRC+ of his career, which weights OBP correctly relative to SLG.

I agree wRC+ is good for weighting… but not sure it’s really comparable season to season?

The baseline against which it’s leveled (scored?) is particularly low this year given a disproportionate amount of mediocre play by below average players around the league…

Also, I seem to remember prior seasons where he was running wRC+ in excess of 200 well into the season.

His xwOBA is right at about career average right now according to baseball savant. His poorer contact rate this year offset by a much better xwOBACON (definitely highest of his career)

Shift has gone too far when I’m seeing 4 outfielders and 3 infielders with Devers batting.

Are many teams playing him this way?

Yeah, there are a lot of stats to pick from. I like to use OPS+, which last I checked his was 195 (very stellar! and nearly his highest ever!). That's what my statement was based on. Didn't mean to derail the thread, sorry guys.

Infield shift hasn’t worked (he’s batting better against the shift than with it)… so maybe just trying to keep the ball from rolling to the wall???
