Lol mythical elevation of Montana. I guess we should do the same with Brady huh? Without Adam Vinatieri Brady wouldn’t have won 3 of his rings. Every one equates QB greatness with SBs. There isn’t a real football fan who doesn’t consider Montana the second best QB in history behind Brady. Young is in a long list of great QBs who could only get it done 1 time. Montana.
Young had the better overall skill set. Walsh loved his potential but Montana kept him on the bench. |

SF in 81 after week 3 on defense only gave up over 17 points 1 time. 31 points. If somebody were going to rank running backs in a era were they needed to be dominant but I would rank as worst in the League in 81, I’ll agree. The plow horses behind Montana, Whoof! SF picked some Whoofers! The oddity in 81 is that the 3 teams they faced in the Post Season, they had played in the regular season. |

Yea - in 1981 that defense really did lead the charge and carry them through the Super Bowl, though Montana came up with a ton of clutch plays all season and in the Super Bowl. Montana hit Clark in the end zone in the NFCCG but Lawrence Pillers sealed the deal in that game. Sort of like the first Brady SB. Stat lines weren't stellar, but an omen of things to come. The 1984 Defense was special, true. So was the offense. That's why they humiliated the Dolphins and derailed Marino's career path. Seifert as 49ers DC deserves a lot more credit than he got. He was equally as brilliant as Walsh. But let's take a look at the 1981 Offense, yes? Super stars galore? Oh wait. Castoffs, never-were's, guys playing above their station. Dwight Clark Dan Audick John Ayers Fred Quillan Randy Cross Keith Fahnhorst Charle Young Freddie Solomon Joe Montana Ricky Patton Earl Cooper When he actually did have super stars he ripped the league apart. The "mythical elevation of Joe Montana"? I'm not sure where that comment gets traction or credibility.

I think the answer to the question/debate rests on the fact that Joe was the gold standard as the GOAT QB before Brady became the living legend that we all have witnessed.

Joe won four as starting QB. Steve won one.
While I admire Steve for his toughness he would have won ZERO if the Cowboys and Troy Aikman hadn't thrown 4 picks in the NFC Championship game that the 49ers won to advance to the SB against the Chargers. The Cowboys also almost came back to win. So essentially the 49ers were spotted a number of scores. |

It's a shame Steve Young doesn't get more love, not in comparison with Montana, but just as an NFL quarterback. He was quite literally one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the NFL and few can even come close to his acumen in and out of the pocket. His accuracy was off the charts and his ability to scramble and score on the ground was second to nobody until Cam Newton came along, but Newton only dreams of being as great as Young was as a passer. Two league MVP Awards bookend a season in which he finished second in voting. The man was a beast.

Both were great QBs but Joe was more clutch when it really counted. He had a ridiculous number of 4th quarter comebacks and game winning drives. Joe also led several game winning drives in the playoffs that directly led to two of the 49ers Lombardi trophies. He pulled two playoff games out of hat with KC too. He really was Joe Cool, Brady before Brady.
