Any teachers get hired in the summer and have some insight into the process?
I got hired about 3 weeks before school started in 2011. They had a teacher decide to not return during the summer, and called me because I had a application in already. Interviewed on a Thursday morning, they called me for some more info Thursday afternoon, got the job the following Monday.

I had made my mind up that I wasn't getting hired for that school year after graduating that May. I had made plans to sub and coach to make money. All but gave up the search, never checked any district sites to see if jobs were posted, and then they called me.

By the end of today, I should have crossed off my 100th item on my "Summer To Do" list.

Only about 250 more items on it before summer starts. Stupid appendix and hospital stay! Threw me behind a good bit....

I like to have my staff by April for budget and preparation purposes

Doesn't mean spots do not open up however

Go special education route if you can't find something
Check to see if there are private special ed schools in your area
They might hire you even if cert if gen ed as long as you say you will work towards sp ed cert over time (they might even pay for it)

Default The madness is ending...

My last day is June 26th and it can't come fast enough. I've enjoyed the first 19 yrs at my residential special ed school but this year was rougher. The administrators let too much slide with the kid's behavior.

I'm thinking of taking early retirement and becoming a mod in the basketball section to relieve my stress.

Thank you sir!

So my school is K-8 with just one class for each grade. 25 students per class on average, so no more than 225 students in total. Most of the kiddos will have the same classmates for 9 years if they started there in Kindergarten.

Yesterday was the last day before Spring Break. We held an "All School" event at the end of the day. That's the entire school in the auditorium. Basically it was a talent show where everyone who "auditioned" got to perform.

Those of you who teach middle school know that most of them are notoriously mean for no apparent reason 90% of the time. You know hormones and such.

Ok so the scene is set... 2nd grader gets on stage. Starts to sing. Freezes. Can't say a word. Visibily terrified. What did our middle schoolers do? I'll let you guess for a little bit.

They absolutely did. They sang for her. They cheered for her. They encouraged her to continue.

There's a lot of horrible stuff in this world. But these kids? These kids are alright.

When I was a kid, it wasn't the teacher's lounge, it was the "staff room":

Loose talk in the classroom
To hurt they try and try
Strong words in the staff room
The accusations fly

I think what I'm most impressed with here is that this is a 9-year old thread with only a single post by a banned member.

You need to come observe our current pass of 450 8th graders in my building. I challenge you to come up with many positive comments after one week!

Whoa, are you still teaching history? I had no idea there were so many educators here on BO.

I am not a teacher, but I'm married to one. In the last nine years since your post, he's taught a couple of things and changed schools, but right now he's teaching history and civics to juniors and seniors. He loves it.

Is this an actual reference to the movie C.H.U.D., an acronym for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers?
