Is it the same scouts that said Yamamoto would be a frontline starter also the ones that said Ohtani would never be a good hitter?

He needs time to adjust to the MLB game.

I watched him pitch against the White Sox in spring training and wasn't very impressed. It was spring training and I'm no scout, so I just chalked it up to being a meaningless performance in a meaningless game. One thing that did stand out though was that they were interviewing Andrew Vaughn during the game and asked him what it was like facing Yamamoto and his answer was a pretty resounding "meh, he's fine I guess". It was very clear that Vaughn and teammates didn't think what they were seeing was anything remotely special.

There hasn't been a dominant Japanese pitcher yet so giving Yamamoto Gerrit Cole money was insane, especially at 5'10" and with zero innings in MLB.

all during ST a buddy of mine who does some analytical work for some sites said "his fastball looks too straight/hittable" but guessed that it was deceptive enough compared to his other pitches to work.

To me it's the angle that looks super hittable.

Shohei Ohtani, Masahiro Tanaka and Yu Darvish come to mind, there haven’t been many but I will reserve judgment on Yamamoto until he pitches a few more games, not about to make the same mistake twice.

Darvish has been the best of the bunch but he's had an up and down career. Ohtani's blown out his arm twice and threw on six days rest. Tanaka received Cy Young votes once during his career.

There has not been a Japanese pitcher anywhere near Verlander, Cole, Kershaw, Scherzer, etc and Yamamoto got a contract those guys would get in their primes today (Cole did).

I agree the money he received was a travesty but the Dodgers are rich enough to take that risk.

Selfishly, I hope Yamamoto turns it around because I'm afraid if he doesn't, it'll tank the value of some of the other NPB guys I'm holding.

I hear you as I have lots of the 2021 topps chrome npb set still 74 cards short of the 216 card set but lots of doubles parallels and inserts and managed to get 4 Yamamoto cards just from buying those 2 pack blisters.

The Mets offered more money.

His command is supposed to be as good as it gets but we did not see that today.

If you reply with...."last one on eBay sold for this"...then you should have bought it on eBay.

Imagine the reception walking off the mound he would have received from Yankees fans if he signed with them for more money than Cole is making.

Which is absolutely ridiculous. If we are comparing Yamamoto to other elite Japanese players, look at how both Ohtani and Ichiro fared when they first came to MLB. We're talking about someone in Yamamoto who is lauded as being one of the best pitchers to ever come from Japan. I have little to no doubt he's going to become a dominant force. It just might take a bit of time.

Or he follows Daisuke Matsuzaka… amazing Japanese talent, average MLB talent.

Had to check his stats. He was worse than I remembered! And only 132 career starts in the majors.
