No I would call them the NHL's version of the Vancouver Grizzlies as the Browns had a rich history in Cleveland. The Grizzlies were a losing franchise that had minor league promotions to paper the stands.

Things were so bad in Phoenix that I heard on sports talk radio about a chain liquor store promotion where if you bought X in alcohol you got a free ticket to the Coyotes game and people that were cheap could get free tickets by going to the parking lot of the store and scooping tickets off the ground.

I hate giving the plug..... but there's an interesting read on ESPN.com that goes into a lot of the behind the scenes wheeling and dealing that went on and may continue to go on.... Perhaps needed with a grain of salt.... but it's not terribly flattering to the Coyote ownership group...

This is just the first round though. I believe the top 8 names will move on to the final vote. I voted for Yeti, Blizzard, Swarm, and Outlaws.

One thing I get from reading and watching interviews of owner Ryan Smith it that he's not a big fan of the Yeti name. He keeps mentioning Blizzard and Swarm almost like he's trying to influence voting. I mean it's his company running the vote.

It looks like we won't have a name until well into next season. I like the idea of a fan vote but this is taking way too long.

This right here. They would make a killing on merch sales if they go Yeti. I'm a diehard Rangers fan, but I'm buying Utah Yeti merch for me and my youngest son.

One thing to keep in mind is the team likely has filed what are called "Intent to Use" trademark applications for each possible name, to test the waters and ensure they can get rights in the names. For those which they can't, they'll likely be eliminated. Then again, if I recall there were issues with Golden Knights that were overcome, so if the owners and/or the public falls in love with a name and it has legal speedbumps chances are those can be resolved, as there is the potential to reach settlement agreements with those who own the trademarks which would block registration of the desired name. And once the name is approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office, it will be used by the team, and then formally trademarked. That is the likely reason they won't begin the season, or at least activities before the season like the draft, with an official name.

It was fun living less than a mile from an "NHL" arena while it lasted.

@PuckReportNHL
NHL Utah owner Ryan Smith made an impromptu appearance on The Pat McAfee Show today, and gave a bit of a sneak peek on a couple of the finalists for the team name.

“We’ve got our four…I think Mammoth is up there, I think Yeti is up there…it should be good.”

I'm going Outlaws, as long as the mascot looks like Warren Jeffs.

Man if they went Yeti you’d the cooler brand Yeti would partner. Huge branding sponsorship opportunity.

I agree. Venom would be dumb, would have worked better when they were in AZ. Outlaws doesn't really vibe, Mammoth I hate and 'HC' is terrible. Blizzard is too close to Avalanche

Yeti should be the obvious choice and since that was the header of the ESPN finalists story I think it will be the winner.

Utah Hockey Club. This feels like the owners had their mind made up all along, and the voting was just for show.

There's no way the majority of fans wanted that stupid ass name

It's only for this season. The final name decision hasn't been made

Well it's a temporary brand for a season. It's not the official name long term. This has always been stated, they would be using a generic logo and name for one season while they develop the real brand for the 25/26 season.

They chose a boring basic logo package and jerseys because why make a fancy logo and jersey ONLY to knowingly replace those great designs? It's much easier to replace uniforms and logos that nobody likes. Especially if the new permanent brand is "disappointing" to some (and thats going to happen because theres people like zapp who hate everything,) there will be people saying they shouldn't of changed it.

Utah HC is a temporary brand and always will be. Even as its in the Top 8 name reveal that was passed around there still has to be names to put on the list to be fodder for the next elimination round.
