I'll go Jude-Rodri-Vini-Lautaro-Mbappe.
Fair points, but I think once you start asterisking performances or certain statistics, it becomes a very slippery slope. How many Messi goals against vastly inferior opponents, Ronaldo penalty goals, Pele goals in exhibitions/friendlies, etc. In the end, Lautaro scored 5 goals, scored the winner in extra time as a substitute, and won the Copa Golden Boot. A pretty impressive palmares.

Circling back to the original question in this thread, it really comes down to how each voter weighs the season long league performance, performance in club competitions outside of the regular season, the performance with the respective National team, and any one off standout goals/performances.

In the end, I believe the process frustrates more fans than it pleases, as there is no guidance as to how performances should be judged and evaluated, nor is there any accountability for the voting. Robert Lewandowski not winning it for the season he had in 2020/21 has to be one of the greatest travesties in all of sport.

Regards

Someone needs to explain to me how Vini merits the award. A forward who finishes 8th in La Liga in goals and 27th in assists (behind the likes of Ante Budimir and Youssef En-Nesyri), tied for third in goals in Champions League, and whose national team consistently underperforms.

Don’t get me wrong- he is a wonderful player who is the main offensive threat for the best club team in the world, and counting stats are overrated, but I just have a hard time seeing it for him this season.

Dani Carvajal is a guy who I’d love to see get some down ballot votes.

It's pathetic. Vini's stats aren't anything special. That said, neither are anyone else's for the most part. A lot of very good players this year, but none even close to the standard that has been set in the Messi/Ronaldo era. This will be the worst winner in the last 20 years.

It has to go to Rodri in my opinion since he won the Euros and was the player of the tournament. Vini flaked in the Copa. Euros>Champions League and it's not even close.

Yamal was handed the 'player of the tournament' award.

They should perhaps also create a 'story of the tournament' award too because he didn't deserve the player award.

Rodri won Player of the Tournament, Yamal was only Young Player of the Tournament. Truth be told, Spain could have filled at least the top 4 or 5 spots in player of the Tournament.

Is it accurate that the only game Rodri started and lost all season was the FA cup final vs Man U? That's a bit crazy

Rodri's odds have tumbled today, 2nd favourite now only just behind Vini Jr. I suspect once the dust settles a bit and the voters have a chance to have a good think he will become the frontrunner.

I'm still scratching my head, like many others wondering what Vini has done to be pole position.

Me three.

Wasn't the best player in his league.
Wasn't the best player in Copa America.
He's gonna have at least two teammates on the FIFA XI.

Jude did more in La Liga and Euro/Copa America and was right behind him in the UCL. He should be the frontrunner.

He was probably the best player in the UCL and had 10 goal contributions, 2nd behind Kane.
