I don't like him or the Dodgers.

Was able to pick up some of his graded cards (not a lot) before his first MVP season cheap. Prices just got so high I sold to purchase other things. Purchased a five card lot of his Bowman chrome rookie for $25($5ea). Sold three raw for $250 each. graded the other two one graded a 10 and one grade 9. Hated to sell them, but the population report was just so high I didn’t see them holding the value that I could get for them. Would one day like to purchase a nice rookie card of his at a decent price once his prime years are behind him.

I collect Ohtani base-running cards. One of his RCs makes the cut. Haven’t made it to 9 cards yet though haven’t picked up any from the 50/50 set yet. Design is so lame I hardly want one.

Pulled his Chrome Prism RC, PSA gave it a 10 but screwed me on his Opening Day Purple, just a 9. So I have those going for me. Got a 10 on a blue 18 RC insert too.

I will never forget looking at several dozen 2018 Update hangers and blasters all covered in dust marked 40% off, March 2019. They were pulled from the store the next day and probably sold online. Had never seen that happen before. Used ta be, it would take 2 years for retail to fully disappear from the shelves.

Because it’s way easier than his hitting and pitching cards. He’s in all my insert checklist collections anyway.

His fielding cards though, that will never make it to 9 cards.

Thinking about starting in on his horizontal cards next. Nobody likes those, but that’s cuz they don’t have an all-horizontal binder to enjoy them in.

Horizontal cards should have never been a thing. #ThanksTopps

I currently have around 30 or so Ohtani cards, the majority (like over 90%) of which I had purchased before 2021 when he blew up and went on his current tear. Now I can’t afford anything meaningful of his. And so I no longer buy his cards. But besides not having a single Ohtani auto, I am mostly content with what I already have of him.

Nope. I love that Griffey got to come back and play for his hometown team. I enjoyed every second of it.

As big a fan of Ohtani as I am, I don't actually have a lot of decent ($$$-wise) cards.
Biggest card is my 50/50 orange foil auto relic (I technically have 2, but uh...that may change in the near future). Got lucky and hit a 2018 TC pitching pink refractor PSA 10 off a $25 Arena Club slabpack. Then I have a 2023 TC purple Sonar refractor SGC 10 I pulled myself.

I also have the full 50/50 base set. But that's pretty much it. Still would like to add a rookie auto to my collection, but probably can only get one if I trade my 50/50 RPA.

As a non-Dodgers/Angels fan, it's not hard not to collect Ohtani because the buy-in prices are, and have been for years, ridiculous. If I ever open a pack with a nice Ohtani, I'll definitely keep it.

Too expensive for the cards that I want. I'll wait until prices come back to earth or just keep collecting other players

Just like that one game Christy Mathewson pitched for the Reds in 1916. If you have a card of him in a Reds uniform I'll take it off your hands. Giants uni Mathewson? No thanks.
Yeah man! The Kid looked great in Red!

It seem like there are people on here that would collect Ohtani if it wasn't for the price. And of all the current players, his prices are the highest (then Judge and Trout).

On the flip side, if you are buying wax at current prices, the chance of a good hit is very low and has a negative expected value compared to the cost.

If you collect other players, 99% of them will go down in value.

I guess I look at it as I get to collect one of the best players in Ohtani, and in the long run it is likely the price I pay will maintain its value long term.

no, realistically no matter what he does I just don't really care to have his cards be part of my collection. Never thought about buying or trading for

Money: I can buy other favorite players for a fraction of the price. Mookie, Lindor, JRam, and others have great cards available for less than Ohtani.

Modern baseball “Hobby Kings” come and go, regardless of how amazing the players were. I have experienced “Ichiro-mania”, “Pujols-mania”, “Kris Bryant-mania”, and “Trout-mania”. When a “Hobby King” begin to lose their shine and their brightness starts to dim, only a selected few “key cards” will continue to hold high value. Then a new “Hobby King” arrives and start a new “mania”.

At the end of the day, collect the players that you love and enjoy. You won’t feel like you’re “missing out”. It took me a while to figure this out.

Ohtani is amazing and I believe he is a generational talent, but I never had the urge to go all-in on his cards because they already started out high. I was unsure if his arm can continue pitching long-term while batting DH on a daily basis.

While I'm certainly not disputing that Griffey isn't more widely collected in a Mariners jersey than a Reds jersey (and rightfully so). It is worth mentioning that EVERY player's cards cost significantly more from the 90s than the 00s. My main player PC, Larkin, has a career that spans that year 2000 threshhold. So I see it daily how the exact same set, numbered the exact same, can be $20 from a 2001 set, while costing thousands in a 1998 set. So that is definitely part of the equation.
