That's a real bargain compared to rookie cards of players from team sports.
Steve Austin is one of the top wrestler names that non-wrestling fans can instantly recognize.

I wouldn't call it a bargain at a 5 relative to other sports for any card not made in the 1950's (or before) unless we are talking about Jordan and a few others who certainly transcend the sporting world and pop culture more than Steve Austin. A 5 is a very ho hum grade for a modern card (even though I've seen 5's that could pass for 9's but for an almost invisible surface flaw through the PSA holder). To get a graded 5 card of just about anything made form 1990 forward that's not autographed or serial numbered to sell for a 150 is remarkable and shows you how dedicated wrestling card collectors are becoming as well as how scarce tha Austin is perceived to be in any grade.
I think that Austin 9 at 600 is looking more and more like a steal of a lifetime as I don't know that we will ever see another one even close. I think someone could double that now if it were to come up for sale again but I could be wrong. |

Yes, 5 is "ho hum" in terms of modern cards, but not many cards graded higher, and very few coming on the market.
Using Michael Jordan as an example, Jordan has over 13,000 cards graded at PSA alone.

I think if more people went after wrestling cards like they do the big 3, we would see more austins getting graded and possibly another 9 or 10. The austin card really isn't that rare, I think people are buying them and sitting on them more than anything. To me rare is less than 15. I have heard of people owning 20 or more austin magazine cards, they just won't sell them.

I don't know, if people are sitting on 20 of them and aren't selling at least a couple at this point I don't know what they are waiting for. I have a hard time sitting on any card anymore no matter how much I like it due to 9 times out of 10 being burned by that "investment" strategy in the past. For every one card you wished you'd held on to because of what it sells for now, there's probably 50 more you're down 50 to 99% on. Austin's place is secure in wrestling history so its not like owning a rookie of a guy who's going to crash and burn, but if you can sell a few at a 100-150 a piece now I don't know why you wouldn't. Who have you heard of owning that many and what reason do they give for just sitting on so many copies of the exact same card?

I'd only expect a few people to have a small quantity of the Steve Austin card in their collections. The card has always been scarce. If you tried to find it 10 years ago you still wouldn't find too many. People buying the card are buying to keep it, at least you don't see much flipping unless it is from breaking up a magazine. For comparison, there are hundreds of Michael Jordan RC's listed at any given time.

I personally know 2 wrestling card collectors who have more than a dozen Austin magazine cards, both attached in the sheet and not attached. They got them in the late 90's and they are content with them in their collection. Which I understand considering who knows how high the card will climb and I am almost sure they paid very little for the cards. I personally would sell them, but my Wrestling interest is in another direction right now.

Even with a fresh magazine the perforations for these cards are all over the place. I suspect many in magazines would not grade high.

Glad you are here Doug, there are some great threads on wrestling cards in this forum so I think that you will enjoy it. Congrats on being over 50% complete on your set. You are getting close and you will really narrow it down with each card you acquire from this point forward. I will be watching your progress.

Here are my most recent additions to my collections. I always love to see such rare wrestling cards get signed. I will send these to PSA/DNA to get slabbed. These cards are from 1982 and from Japan.
This is one of the earliest cards of Abdullah the Butcher. These cards were made in Japan in 1982 and I sent some money to his BBQ joint in Atlanta and he got them done for me. He was very prompt and I am very glad to add these to my collection. |

I can't make out the first word in his signature. Is it Mr. Abdullah Butcher?

I met Ivan Koloff at a show this past weekend. I got him to sign a few of the 88 NWA cards that he has. His Sig is getting shaky, but he is a very nice and approachable guy. Hopefully your butcher cards will do well.
Here is one of the cards: |

Dam that Inoki is sweet. How did you score that one?
I really hope Leaf gets him in to sign in their next set. Does he have any cert autos. |

No Cert autos for Inoki, I heard he asks a lot to sign so I don't think he will be added anytime soon.

From the opened 1974 Yamakatsu material I've seen for sale a PSA 7 is pretty strong. Most look like the would grade 5-6 for corner dings and "dirty" backs due to the original snow-white card stock they used.

There is a great looking 1993 WCW Magazine set on EBAY now. $265 with time to go.
I just purchased a group of magazines from the UK with one it it and hopefully they are nice. So far only four Steve Austin's have been graded so there has not been a big pick up in graded supply. I have my Cactus Jack at PSA now and hopefully it does well. I personally like this Steve Austin card a lot more then his Cromy and have one of those at PSA now too. When I first clicked on the link I was hoping it was a Buy It Now and then saw the price. Good luck if anyone is going after it. |
