It's different

I could walk into the local gas station 30 years ago and buy as many packs as I wanted of 87 Topps Football. If I pulled a base Dan Marino or Bernie Kosar? I busted the nut I didn't even know I had at that age. I didn't even need an LCS or Target. When those popped up? Holy crap

My parents used to buy us hobby boxes at Sams Club (wholesale club at the time) that we got to open a few packs after church if we would shut up. My first David Robinson Hoops RC cost me 50 cents for the pack.

Driving across state lines to clean out a store? That would have been the most insane thought on the planet

All of this really begs the question.....will Topps up production next year to meet demand? Clearly all these products are in limited supply Or maybe blasters will be $29.99 next year since it's obvious Topps and the retailers are leaving money on the table....

It's like people these days refuse to take a moment and step back from a situation and ask themself "does this make sense?"

Who? Me? Never sold "packs" and totally agree those people should be frowned upon. They are cheaters.

Someone who buys/sells doesn't embody every single negative aspect of the hobby.

Check BO Heritage blaster prices. Does that mean they are pack searchers, too?
Of course not.

Reminds me of a Christmas I got a box of 92-93 hoops and pulled the redemption card for the lottery picks with Shaq and those other guys. I was running in circles around the tree with my dad laughing at me.

I still have all those cards.

I pulled a Shaq/Hardaway Thunder and Lighting insert... 1/36 but there were like 10 of them so it was 1 in. 10 boxes... and I lost my virginity

My son will never get that

Anyone that says it's the same is insane

I'm not grumpy old man. I'm a willing participant.

But people driving to 30 targets is not what it used to be

Don't worry, the people driving to 30 targets are likely too obese, possess too strong body odor, or are far too socially inept to find a willing mate. So we won't have to worry about them lacking fond hobby stories like those to share, or passing down the tales of their retail profit travels.

Depends on when you're talking about. I can remember trading with friends and money "NEVER" came into the conversation. It was about the card you needed and the double you could trade.

Everyone always wants to simplify things, in order to create some false sense of this=good because I believe it is good & this=bad because it is bad and therefore all bad things that I've deemed to be bad, ever, must be within it.

I have many fond hobby stories to share. I started with cards in 1987 and have been hooked since. I was happy with what I got back then as a kid, and I still have a large amount of Don Mattingly cards from that era. But we were also taught not to expect things to be handed to us, and even though I really wanted the Ken Griffey from the 1989 Upper Deck box, it was more expensive, and my Mom couldn't afford it. I did yard work to save up for cards. I eventually saved enough for the Griffey, while simultaneously learning the value of hard work. There were many, many cards I wanted, but would never be able to afford them all. THAT WAS OK. I did not end up in therapy because of baseball cards not being readily available to me as a child.

My girlfriend helps me look for items to flip as well. She thinks your comments are cute.

Do you pay for music? Or just download for free? I ask, because among other things besides flipping, I write. I write scripts, I write songs. My GF plays music with me as well. Do you pay for music? Or is that owed to you like baseball cards are?

Side note observation: funny that "jcardstore" says he never intended to sell cards, yet his name is "jcardstore".

2nd side note observation: I predict no one who mentions "the kids" actually have kids, and are in their 20's with all of life's actual worries (food, shelter, health care) taken care of. They go to one retail outlet, decide to pass on the plethora of readily available cards that are there because those are not the "hot" ones, and that's the extent of the effort to find something.

Also, the previous comment about "buying a set at much cheaper" made me ponder, where do those sets come from? Flippers? People who buy so much of a product that they can then sell said sets at an affordable price to "collectors" who complain in a baseball card forum about flippers? You would spend much more in buying boxes to find the one card you may be looking for, or to build a set. There are positives to the current state of things for collectors.

I don't currently drive around and clean them out, but I used to, and see nothing wrong with it. Pack searchers suck. Bootleg card printers who steal images suck (search "Aaron Judge Derby card"). There are red lines. I just don't see hoarding as being one of them. It's not medicine.

This thread has been fun. I don't think anyone is a bad person, opinions on the internets are just weird and utterly as meaningless as some hypothetical idolized consumer product.

The joy from dancing around the tree...I know what the true value in the room that day was, and it sure wasn't a stupid baseball card.
If you started collecting in 1987 then you are too young to know the hobby I am talking about. I'm not being a jerk or sarcastic. It's just a fact. By 1987 the $ factor was in an upswing.

I can bet anyone who collected cards in 92(i think was the year) when topps gold and Brien Taylor were all the rage. We used to spend a whole sat driving from store to store to find the packs that had a topps gold showing... That was a blast... I remember finding a Taylor topps gold and sold it for some big coin for a 12 year old.

I was aware enough to realize the $ factor was an 80's thing in many aspects of American life during that time, if only from my parents history. I am well aware I missed the spoke wheels time period, but that is gone and will never come back, at least for trading cards. Maybe for other things it exists now. (fidget spinners haha)

haha, I'd love to see what that card would look like a week after my nephew pulled it in a pack.
