been searching for this bad boy for a while. it rarely comes up for auction. i remember loving the set and eagerly ripping packs when it first came out. Now more than 25 years later it's nice to have the more rare (anyone know how rare)? variation. All i can find is that the variation was initially given to dealers...

This is from 1998, and I think this card is emblematic of all things Griffey in those days:

Uh. Oh.

That sounds like it may ultimately cost me a few dollars.

The Maddux sold for $450 the other day. It was on my watch list. I’m a Maddux collector but I have my limits. Pretty crazy. Beautiful card though!

One of my all time favorites and one of the few PSA 8s in my PC. One day I'll try to upgrade it

I’ve been after one for a while. I don’t think I’ve seen another Griffey that pops as much as this one. I have a 2014 dynasty as well, and I’m pretty sure I like the 98 Chirography even more.

I almost never post on the board, but I'm irked by the original poster who asked about the value of a Maddux Embossed Refractor. "DaaaaBears" is already well aware that the 1997 Finest Gold Embossed Die-Cut Refractor of Greg Maddux recently sold for $450 - because he is the person who agreed to buy it. His eBay user ID is "dabearsrock_17_9" and his name is Mark Jones.

Mark Jones ("DaaaaBears") made an offer on eBay that I reluctantly accepted. Then, instead of paying for the card, he came here to Blowout and pretended that he was "curious" about what these cards sell for. And he never did pay for the card. I don't appreciate the ruse from Mr. Jones, and I have no problem calling it out here.

The good news for me is that I no longer have to sell the Maddux Embossed Refractor to Mr. Jones at a discount. I was already regretting my acceptance of his offer. It's just frustrating that this clownfraud caused the listing to disappear from eBay while I waited for payment from him.

Not super rare but I love the hitting machine inserts. Very cool Insert IMO

I would consider this a situation where he was wondering if he was about to overpay, not that he knew the value because those finest embossed are tough to gauge value. Not defending the actions of offering and not paying. That is a bad look.

I don't think I have been so exciting to show off such unimpressive looking cards before in my life

1992 Ace Novelty: I received new information / confirmation by way of someone on Facebook from an email dated nearly 20 years ago. Here is what I have known, along with what I know now thanks to the person who stepped forward:

Back in 1992, Ace Novelty (the creator of those ugly troll dolls) was set to go head to head with Topps and create their own set of baseball cards. One of the highest #ed cards found was 880 or so (Nolan Ryan) - it was gonna be a monster set, apparently! There were versions of these cards in different languages as well. Japanese, French, etc.

As the story goes: The set was going to be approved, and the guy who worked there (also a little league coach) gave out each kid (12-15 kids) approximately 35 cards each back in 1992 or so. Apparently, no two cards were the same from the whole lot. Ace ended up NOT getting the license (which is why you've likely never seen these cards before.)

They printed up about three pallets of these cards, but when they were not approved for the license, they were ordered to take the pallets to a landfill and oversee them being buried. The guy who was overseeing it apparently kept a sheet, selling it years later on ebay. This sheet went for peanuts compared to what it could have gone for, so a reseller bought the sheet, chopped them up and sold them for big money - many of these had wrinkles in them too. The sheets were literally just paper thing, with blank backs. A finished Puckett card sold for over $400 years ago.

Initially, I had two finished cards allegedly from the Little League incident and 4 blank backs (2 fronts, 2 backs) from the sheet I mentioned. I sold them all - out of all the proofs/prototypes I have sold in the past and haven't gotten back, these were the ones I missed the most from the junk wax era by a country mile. Thankfully, I was able to recently get back the two finished cards! I'm super happy about it I would have gone for the blank backs in a heartbeat from the sheet as well if I were a supercollector, but now I just care about the regular cards.

Here are pics!

Welcome home, my cardboard loves, welcome home.

Thanks! I've emailed him a few times in my quest for Van Slykes, but it's been a while since I've reached out to him.
