For an investor, I don't know what to think...Ohtani RC auto vs. S&P 500 fund etc. I don't own any bitcoin, but I can imagine investors thinking about Ohtani RC auto vs bitcoin...anyone on here invest in Ohtani RC auto cards and bitcoin...would be interested in your take as well.
I actually had a friend that invested in bitcoin at about the same time I started collecting Sho in 2018. We ironically have about the same net worth (bitcoin vs Sho cards) with his total investment being about 30-40% higher. It kind of makes sense as many Sho cards have 5-10x'd from 2018 levels and some have even 20x'd from 2019-2020.

However, I think the equalizer or edge he has is liquidity, as it would be difficult to move a Sho collection at fair market quickly. Bottom line, cards can make you money if you have the time to cash out, but they aren't really a novel/practical investment.

I am in this hobby to have fun and collecting cards brings me great joy. I am married, have 5 children, don't have many vices except this and coffee so consider this as my entertainment budget. It's a vehicle that transports me back to time when I was young and life was more innocent (the halcyon days) while at the same time providing me with an escape that allows me to decompress from my day job as an executive running businesses and managing people. For Ohtani in particular, I was late to the party unlike the Mayor and others which means my risk exposure is far greater but am making inroads...I just have to work a little harder but certainly find it fun.

Comparing investing in sports cards to the S&P just doesn't compute. Please be careful and never take real investment advice from anyone on these boards.

But as I said before I don't invest in cards. I collect for fun...at the same time I want to put my fun money into cards that are more likely to go up in value then down.

My question above is more trying to understand the economics of the Ohtani RC auto market. And to also hear from investors in how they look at this market vs something speculative like bitcoin etc.
One thing you might ask yourself is if you buy a $10k Ohtani card, how often would that same card change hands? I know how closely you like to follow the low end Ohtani market, would you be comfortable holding something that doesn't change hands nearly as often? Is that something that might cause you to worry not knowing clearly what your card might be priced at?

Note, I picked this up for significantly less than say a "standard" Chrome Gold refractor, those are going for like a grand.

I feel the moment dictates the desirability of this one, his first appearance as a Dodger.

Thankful I shied away from the Soto Yankees cards, but was tempted.

I grabbed one of these as well. Shohei’s first game as a Dodger as a Chrome SSP. Couldn’t get much better than that.

Morbid topic, but some chats going on about Sho cards lost in the socal fires. It's a fair concern, but I hope nothing super nice was lost..

Still trying to get my head around what’s going on here in L.A. it’s apocalyptic.

Not sure where Sho ended up moving after the address of the home (in La Cañada Flintridge) he purchased this past Summer was disclosed but that home is now close to the evacuation zone of the Eaton fire which is only 15% contained. To hell with his cards, let’s just hope he’s safe wherever he is.

My buddy is his neighbor and he actually still lives there (pre-fire). Press backed off after they banned one of the Japanese new stations.

Yikes. My sister lives just on the other side of the 210 freeway and has been evacuated... let's just hope he and all the cards he owns of his are safe!

A lot of people near the hills got evac notices earlier this week at 3am and their houses were gone in the morning. It's a very real situation. Even i have a go-pack and a few select slab cases ready, just in case.

Alright, time to reel this back in and focus on my "healthy" distraction.

Bought this card raw recently and it finally arrived in the mail...

Just curious, how many here collect only Ohtani, Ohtani + 1, 2, 3 players, etc?

My Current focus is primarily Ohtani, then Bobby Witt Jr. In the future, I plan on getting back to Griffey Jr., Bonds, Ryan, and vintage.

I PC various key cards in the hobby but do have a mini collection of Ohtani and Griffey specifically.

This is me.

Sho and Bobby, currently, with no plans to go beyond that.

Ohtani, Soto, Betts, Judge, Witt. Ohtani is my #1 by a country mile.

That's a great looking card! The stars remind me of the 1998 Select Jersey Number stars like my Griffey.

Interesting to see a few of us have the Ohtani/Witt focus. BWJ is clearly one of the best young players and Ohtani possibly the greatest of all time, but both are also extremely likable and seemingly good people. BWJ is also a collector and loves this stuff too.

Same here, minus Witt. The other 4 are locks as generational talents.

Thank you to the dozen+ members who have messaged me about my TC Sapphire Orange auto being fraudulently auctioned on eBay. This is the second time this has happened with a zero feedback seller using images from my listing with AI enhanced background to run an auction. I have already reported it to eBay and there is no need to message me, but if you could also do the same, I'd appreciate it.

I don't understand this. Because of eBay Authenticity Guarantee, wouldn't this sale eventually not go through? Is the seller hoping a fake somehow manages to get past eBay?

You don’t get paid until it clears AG, right?

So there is no loan opportunity.
