Appreciate all the info in here. I just can’t pull the trigger to open any boxes. Way to large of a chance the YG’s are gonna be damaged. What a shame. UD really should make a statement on this, so far all I saw was their responses to contact them on Twitter.

My dealer received his cases from Southern Hobby Supply. I'm also curious to see if others received their case from them, GTS, or another distributor. I haven't opened mine and I'm waiting to see if we hear anything from Upper Deck.

When does Series 1 go live on e-pack?

I think they give a couple months for the LCS's to jack up prices before they list on epack at $99.99/box (assuming no additional increases from 2019-20 Series 1 and 2).

I know my dealer in Grand Rapids, Michigan picked his up from the distributor in-person so not sure what one has a distribution center in that area??

Still crickets from UD. Not sure why they can't just release a public statement acknowledging the damaged base card & YG issue on Twitter???

So, some product has normal corners and a lot appears to have the rounded corners. I will definitely be keeping my cases sealed now.

I have two fat pack cases (6 boxes/18 packs/26) and 2 retail cases (20 boxes/24 packs/8).
trying to decide whether or not to open...

will Upper Deck treat retail returns any differently from Hobby returns?

Really, what remedy could Upper Deck offer to make this right for those folks that have a box or two?

I plan to open mine as they were purchased to open with my kids anyway...the only cards with much value would be Lafreniere YG and the various inserts and SSP, of which the vast majority of the latter are supposedly cut well.

What's the risk in opening?

It sucks. there's clearly a systemic issue with the corners of - unfortunately - the only cards people really buy the product for.

It also falls under the old "don't expect anything better than about an 8 out of the pack" rule.

There was a time when getting a 9 or even an 8 from a pack was a big deal. The wax packs from the 80s and earlier didn't exactly protect cards from the factory through storage, distribution, shipping, delivery and shelving/handling/displaying for sale. Throw in factory issues and now there was actual scarcity.
This in part led to the grading trend so that truly nice cards would get high grades and 8 was a valuable collectible. Even a 7 was nice if graded straight from the pack and only fell because of centering and a couple of corner touches or edge issues.
Now everyone expects 9 at a minimum and get all bent when their packs/boxes don't yield the Gem cards. If every card was perfect the collecting industry would shift dramatically. How many 9.5/10 YGs are out there already of McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon, Pettersson etc. and even Crosby? Plenty. Makes you wonder why anyone would pay a premium for a modern 10 after awhile.
If a large amount of product from the factory is actually damaged then that's one thing. I wouldn't be too happy either. But even so, the impact on the market is a good thing. It creates actual rarity for over-produced cards.
But too many gem miners want flawless when that just ain't possible.
Want a 10? Buy a 10- or accept the risks with buying sealed product.

Do you think cards like this are acceptable out of the box?

I wouldn't be happy if I pulled those either- and I acknowledged it in my post.
I got into a lot of Ultimate this year- so many chipped and flawed cards.

This is where I would disagree with you. The overall effect on the market/hobby would be negative.

I was planning on purchasing more of this product, but not anymore given the card condition. I'd imagine others have made the same decision.

Sealed wax prices will drop in the future if this remains well-known. It hurts everybody's bottom line (except for a few lucky individuals).

I don’t think anyone would be happy opening a box with corner problems.

I don’t exactly think anyone is owed replacements refunds, or free stuff because of it, either. One of the six boxes I’ve opened so far seems to have had the crummy corners - I’ve also got some base with mutilated back-corners, and i suspect others do too, they just don’t care to search the base pile - i found mine while sorting.

I think I’d like to hear UD address what they think the process-shortcoming that caused the problem was, and what they plan on doing to prevent it from happening again, but that’s where it kind of stops for me. I will also freely admit that I might be more upset right now if one of my cooked young guns was a Lafreniere. As it happens, I remain firmly on team “condition out of the pack not guaranteed” unless it’s egregiously “parts of the guys name is gone” miscut, or it was seamed in the pack, “capital-B” Bent, or had something obnoxiously wrong with the printing.

Bad corners are fully inside the “sh*t happens” box, to me. I *will* likely wait and see if the issue becomes less common before i buy any more boxes, because why wouldn’t everyone do that at this point? But I’m not going to contact customer service and pretend to be mad about the box i got, because I’m not all that mad.

Upper Deck seems content telling people to DM them on Twitter. Clearly they know it’s an issue but want to keep it hush hush.

After waiting 3+ days they DM'ed me back saying that they would replace any YG or insert with damage if I provided front and back pics of each card. For base they just told me to say how many I needed. You also must provide proof of purchase from a UD authorized dealer. For sealed boxes they will do nothing because I guess there is no proof that they are damaged. I typically buy 4-6 hobby boxes of S1/S2, but this time I got a case as I wanted to sit on some sealed because of Alexis. After 6 boxes of the case I'm not feeling confident about the remaining 6 and I don't feel good about trying to sell the remaining as the buyer would not be eligible for UD replacement warranty. I was really hoping that UD would offer exchanges for the remaining boxes of my case, but I understand why they can't I guess... It just sucks that I could sell my 6 sealed boxes to nearly cover the cost of the case at the current market price for hobby boxes.

So glad my new rule is... only buy graded if I cannot see in hand.

Unacceptable QC.

No excuse

Also, just a shocking card with no fans. Maybe it will become iconic but leaves me wanting more.

That's good that they gave you a response and will replace the damaged cards. It seems like for those of that have sealed product it makes sense to open it now in case they run out of replacements of certain cards in the future.
