Yes, there will be retail. I wouldn’t be surprised if they flood the market with retail just like they did with Select football. I know a lot of people hate that, but it will be fun to actually open some Select on the cheap, since hobby boxes will sell for big bucks.

Has RETAIL been confirmed for Select this year?
Can't imagine they'd pass up the easy $ after football this year, right? |

This is…odd. So retail isn’t going to have standard base cards and those will stay hobby exclusive?

Looks like they took note of the complaints of NFL retail watering down everything in Select.

"It won’t be difficult — at all — for fans and collectors to differentiate the hobby version from its retail counterpart. The latter, as you’re about the find out, boasts the bold, blue base cards. That’s it. That’s the tell"
"While the hobby edition of 2020-21 Select Basketball will arrive in hobby shops across North America on Friday, retail versions just started packing out and shipping this week, which means they should be arriving in most retail outlets in the next two weeks or so." So Retail won't have Silvers at all? Last edited by Stein316; 07-29-2021 at 07:28 AM. |

I think I like this move by Panini though. It might make a product that people seemed to already be confused by, more confusing, but like already mentioned it's better than all the die cuts and it keeps the base cards in hobby boxes more coveted. |

They show blue silvers, a tri-color and flash parallel. Didnt see base silvers.

Well, at least this will keep retail resale prices down. If you can’t get regular base cards or true silvers from retail, these shouldn’t be big sellers. It’s almost like they’re making this retail SKU the outlet mall version of regular Select, where it’s the same name but nothing inside the retail packs will be the same as what you can get in hobby packs. That’s just like walking into a J Crew or Banana Republic factory store, where it looks the same on the outside, but all the merchandise is different than what you’d find in a regular store, it’s a cheaper product that’s made specifically for that outlet store.
This should keep the hobby purists happy, but I’m not sure I like this move. If Prizm, Optic, Mosaic, etc. can have regular base cards and silvers, there’s no reason Select shouldn’t have the same thing. I guess we’ll have to see how the retail exclusives like Tiger and Elephant pan out. If those hold value (and if they’re actually hard to find) then they might be fun chases.

At least they've changed it up from what they did with Football but there were numerous other better options than what they chose. |
