What’s the update on Crochet? Did his demands kill his market?

Braves were still sniffing around with the Whitesox as of this afternoon but not sure how serious discussions are at this point.

28 hr 86 rbi 20 sb last year. Lefty killer. Not a great outfielder. Not going to put a team over the top for a title but the type of player championship teams have on them.

Jazz playing 3B for the first time in his career today because Gleyber refuses to play 3B is one of the funniest things I read today.

Yup. Another reason to trade the garbage Torres. Chisholm tells the team he'll play wherever they need him. The dude with the most errors at his position, won't budge.

Feels like a massive overpay and I like Kikuchi. Bloss shot up thru the minors so fast I can’t believe they didn’t think he was worth more than this. But Kikuchi does help us win this year compared to Bloss

Apparently his market is “heating up” again, but who knows. If he gets traded it will be to some team no one expected.

Now it’s being reported the Astros are sending Joey Loperfido AND Will Wagner along with Bloss to Toronto for 4 months of Kikuchi. This makes absolutely no sense. I refuse to believe that’s the actual trade. I’m speechless

That’s almost criminal if true. The CAN-US exchange rate must be at an all time low.

Kikuchi trade is one of the worst trades in years. Wow.

I’m a “parades over prospects” guy AND I think Astros fans overrate the hell out of Joey Loperfido but I still can’t wrap my brain around this trade. I cannot imagine what Skubal Crochet or even Flaherty is gonna cost if this is what the market has become

Hell Montas (who stinks) just landed Joey Wiemer who was a top prospect not too long ago.

I don’t think Skubal is getting traded, and I think Crochet tanked his own market to protect his health. Flaherty should bring in a nice haul.

While there is no obvious connection to a trade at this time Christian Walker was pulled after 3 innings with no obvious injury reasoning. Something to at least keep an eye on.

*EDIT*

NVM now being reported left oblique

If they see value in signing someone longer term, they will - otherwise they trade them and restock their system.

If you think eflin, Jason Adam and paredes are the difference in being major contenders this year…that’s just not rational thinking.

The next punt? When was the last one? Again, this team has made the playoffs five straight seasons. Winning record every season since 2018. All while being in the AL east. How many teams have made the playoffs the last 5 years? How many have had a winning record every year since 2018? Hint: those lists aren’t long.

You have some type of emotional charge against how they operate - the results speak for themselves.
While true, those contracts are also the bedrock of virtually every World Series champion. The Rays don't sign those types of deals because they can't. That means they need to spend differently. See below.

I mean Efflin and Adam went to contenders for good prospects and I doubt that the Cubs thought Paredes was worse than Morel. Those are all good players under team control for multiple years. The Rays are taking the downgrade to spread the value out over more years and/or push it to the future.

If the Rays spent more, is that all they need to be not-a-bottom-third run organization?
Yes, they need to spend more. If we accept that they are maxed out on cash, then they need to spend their prospect capital (like virtually every WS winner does!). It hit me last offseason as I was doing my prospect list. This was a team that won 99 games the previous year and even before they let go of Glasnow they were a top 3 farm system. Then the next year they are punting. Leaving that type of value on the table is just as wasteful as signing a big contract (if not more wasteful!).

The problem isn't so much that the Rays are punting right now. The Giants are in a similar position and are behaving in the same manner. The problem (and why they are poorly run) is they left bullets in the chamber over the last few years when they actually had a chance. They are going into the punt with a top tier farm system while the Giants are going in with a bottom tier system. They are giving up without even having tried.

Astros GM is a moron. Plain and simple. If you’re willing to give that up for Kikuchi why not pony up a bit more and go for Skubal or Flaherty???

Some freaking Jonah Hillesque stat nerd saying “I’m telling you bro Kikiuchi is our guy”

I think waiting until the last min to trade Skubal will bite them. Teams will just pivot to another player and it will lessen the value of him since it will remove one team who needs him (filling in a SP gap, not saying the caliber of player).

I am all for a team trading a guy who has an extra year or two of control if they don't see themselves getting to the playoffs during that time. Might as well get a haul of talent and beef up the farm system to have a good team in a few years.

We have about 10 hrs until the deadline. I’m wondering if my Orioles make another deal or if the clock expires without another major move.

Shocked he wasn’t traded already. No point in keeping him. Even if the prospect doesn’t pan out, still better cause they should move up in the draft (in theory) too with a few more losses.

Have to wonder at this point if something broke down as far as who would go back to Detroit or If something showed up in his physical. I almost wonder if another team jumped in the mix last minute. Guess we will find out in the coming hours.

Maybe there’s a NBA like trade involving 5 or 6 teams that moves both Flaherty and Skubal.
