After seeing some recent results for Ohtani autos, this market is nuts. I think it's probably a mistake to buy any non-rookie or bottom tier set rookie autos right now. There are actually surprisingly few available at auction on Ebay and that's probably pushing up prices in combo with Asian buyers who don't care the year or the set paying crazy prices for autos. Here's some recent results

2018 9.5 Gypsy Queen: $1300 LOL
2020 Inception /25: $570
2019 Panini /99: $500
2018 Clearly Authentic /75: $900
2018 9.5 High Tek: $1400 with a day left

Other crazy ones:

A 9.5 Red TC Auto 20k two days ago but a BGS 10 Gold Wave TC Auto for 15k today. That is so beyond out of whack. And the Wave even more so with the PSA 10 BC Pitching auto finishing only 10k higher.

Those make the BC Autos really good buys in comparison.

There aren't that many on the market, that's the point. There are so few sellers. "Ohtani auto" without leaf or panini produces only 30 live auctions right now. That is a tiny amount considering how hot Ohtani's market is and how many Ohtani autos have been produced(20,000+)

So a PSA 10 700 Mother's Day Pink /50 (pop 3) goes for $2,850 while a 700 Gold /2018 (pop ~30) goes for $1,500 and $2,000 in last week.

There are opportunities out there, folks.

Holy shart. I had my #150 Gold PSA 10 up for $4999 with no bites what feels like just a few weeks ago. Glad I just took it down.

There's no way you come close to that off Goldin. A raw Gold TC Refractor just did $1400 two days ago. The 2018 Panini Ohtani 1/1 Patch on there went for 60k. Goldin is clearly the place to go for selling high end Ohtani stuff. Insanity

Is Update RC still more desirable in the market?

I had been more so of "first RC = S2" enthusiast, but have to admit that the Update image is much more preferable.
S2 is a poor photo shop job done on his jersey and his eyes looking weird probably due to trying take the shadow out of underneath the brim of his cap.
That being said, these my RC grails of Ohtani.

Beautiful cards! My thoughts on S2 vs Update. S2 came out first but as you said, the image is better on Update compared to the photoshopped image on S2. Also, Update has batting image (#285) black/Indy/Mothers day/Fathers day/Camo etc parallels while S2 does not. Having said that, both S2 and Update parallels will be sought after imo. Perhaps the 2011 Topps Update also has an effect and impact.

I don't think the ball used in relic was from Ohtani's actual at-bat, but a random ball from the same game.
