I don't follow Soto as closely as others, and I don't say this to troll, but are we sure there isn't an injury? I mean, you can generally point to injury (or off field issues) when explaining struggles from other hobby darlings.
Is the explanation "just" contract pressure + not getting pitches to hit?

The not getting pitches to hit argument is bs. How many all-star caliber players does he need to be surrounded by to be “protected.”

His issue seems to be he's not swinging enough. His Z Swing % was over 60% his first few years, its down to 53.7%. It seems like he's trying to always work out a walk unless he gets a perfect pitch.

Yeah that's a non starter argument for me too.

Matt Olson leads the league in strikeouts but his homer numbers and OPS are through the roof.

Soto just doesn't want to strike out and he just doesn't swing the bat enough. That obviously influences his hit numbers. Freddie Freeman is the better Juan Soto right now. But that can/may change here soon given what we've seen from Juanjo in the past.

Oof, that's dumb. So only 23 Update is a Padres uni, out of all of the releases!?

I was thinking this over the weekend. Didn’t he have a calf injury during spring training?

He at times is very passive, and isn't elevating the pitches he is getting enough.

He is still getting walks, and is still getting hard contact from what I remember reading.

I think others said he sometimes waits too long to swing, and suddenly the count is 1-2 and he isn't getting anything good to hit.

I think its gone to his head. I think its all mental right now. He's been told he has the best eye at the plate, in the history of baseball. He believes it. He gets off on knowing that ball was 1/4 inch off of the plate. Then as Zauron said, he gets behind in counts. He's then playing catch up. But now, he's pressing because he knows $400M is sitting out there. He will turn it around, eventually.

All he wants to do is shake his head and shuffle. San Diego fans have almost given up on him already lol

Complete brain fart...I had Flagship and Dynasty in mind.

Yeah, there are a lot of others as you rightly called out.

Or not. He may have had a few good seasons at a young age, and that may have been due to a little bit of luck. Sometimes the difference between. 300 and .270 is luck ... over 600 plate appearances per season.

Soto was/is still young. That was the biggest reason he was pumped so much. Think about it, he wasn't going for batting titles or leading the league in jacks, he was young, and everyone here, including myself, went after him.

I think it’s a very real possibility that 2023 is not the outlier season rather 20/21 was and teams have identified a pretty effective scouting report for attacking him. There is of course the very real possibility that he was 24 In his aged 20 breakout seasons

By the eye test, it sure seems like he's up there looking to walk and working from behind in the count on a continuous basis, which is disastrous for AVG.

If we're hard pressed for positives, here's a few from statcast:
-'23 hard hit rate is above his career best and top 7% in the league, EV sits right at his career average, barrel rate is his 2nd best ever.

Reasons to worry though are his Max EV at a career low, XBA worst of career, WOBA is worst ever, XWOBA 2nd worst since '18, K rate highest ever.

2023 is a small sample, but he's had 582 AB's since the start of last season and is hitting only .235 over that span.

It's very strange.

I was saving my 2000th post to do a tribute to Soto with all my favorite cards and memories. Something that could really motivate people.

But I wasted it on some non sense post by accident about some dumb television show.

Need to wait for post 3,000 now.
