Interesting, that card sold on Goldin just last month. I mostly think of re-packers going after $100 slabs in bulk.

Congrats on the huge hit!

There was a break I was watching....there was Red /5 and I cannot remember the player name, but there was a poster that swore that the exact same card had been broke in the morning and was in a repack later that night.

There is more than one Oz if you peek behind that curtain.

Might not be anything too nefarious. I could see true degens just selling their hits back to the breakers immediately for more bites at the apple. Some of these repack guys probably immediately reach out in DMs to make the offer if they know they have one of those types who will just spend the money on more breaks later on.

That hurts my brain, but seems like a fair point.

Same logic behind the people who win $50 on a $1 scratch off and just buy 50 more $1 scratch offs with the money I suppose.

For this particular break I was involved in. The breaker basically auctions off teams through live bidding. There is a wheel spin per person that won each bid to determine which team they will get for that break. In this instance, I luckily won the Angels. Of course we do not know what team will have the case hit, so it's all chance.

Also, the breaker states the floor and ceiling for each card and how many cards will be in the break. Makes it fun and definitely gets your heart pumping through it all. I definitely got lucky because no one knows (sometimes even the breaker as they claimed) what the big card is.

There was another break similar to this where the ceiling of the case hit was between $30k-$35k, last team on board was the Angels. Bidding went as high as $9k, and I thought long and hard whether to participate in it. I probably should have placed some bids because the card was a 2018 Bowman Ohtani BGS 9.5 true blue refractor auto /150

$9,000 for a spot, yeah, I'll see myself out and go back to my binder.

It was just that last spot that sold for $9k. It seems most bidders had a feeling (including myself, well at least 90%) that the Bowman Ohtani card would be the case hit. The other spots before that sold between $4k-$5k

$4-$9k for one spot is absolutely WILD.

What gave you guys a "feeling" Ohtani would be the case hit? Watched several cases opened with no Ohtani case hit so people felt he was "due"?

One shot at an unknown card or hookers and blow?

I don't do drugs, because Nancy told me not to, but I know which one I would choose.

Breaking & repacks aren't gambling though.

Wild how often the last spot to go in a random team break ends up being the best team in the product huh?

Some breakers remove all chance (or illusion of chance depending on how cynical you are) and keep the best team out of the random and then auction it off last with some sort of bonus for the highest selling lot in the break.

WOW.
How did the winners of the $4k spots do?
Were they able to get anything close to what they paid for?

Yep absolutely wild! This is why I was just in the stands watching the bids and did not participate until the only team left up on the wheel was the Angels. I did place a couple smaller bids, but I couldn't go "all in" on $9k and above at that time.

Although I was almost certain that the Ohtani Bowman RC is the case hit, there is just that 5%-10% feeling well what if it isn't? The second best card from the break is valued between $12k-$15k so maybe the Angels spot could possibly be the 2nd best hit? But then again, most cards were valued in the $1,000-$2,500 range so yeah it's definitely a gamble and you yourself would have to make that decision.

Not sure if you were being serious or not, but even repacks can be a gamble. Most of these repacks have say about 15 cards in them ranging as low as say $500 to as high as $35k. There are 30 MLB teams, and practically half the teams paid for won't get a hit. Some teams may get a 2nd or even a 3rd card. You just never know.

It's not for everyone and definitely be wise about getting into something like this. I tell my friends to not do it, there's a lot more downside than up.

It seems this breaker is well-trusted and has been around for years. Everything is shown live on camera (all boxes, when he removes the saran wrap on each box to reveal the cards, the wheelspin shows all teams and shows which team gets selected each time, etc.

They usually get over 100 people in the room, but that one particular huge break night, I believe I saw about 300?

I think some maybe most did well. Here are a few of the bigger hits pulled from that break:
2018 Topps Chrome Acuna Jr. Red wave auto /5 PSA 10
1933 Goudey Ruth SGC 1.5
2024 Bowman's Best Skenes Superfractor auto die-cut PSA 7
Ty Cobb cut auto PSA 8
Diamond Icons Carroll auto 1/1 gold
2024 Sapphire Chourio Orange auto PSA 10
Bowman Chrome Caminero auto superfractor (ungraded)

I think he may be getting some bad juju for not signing my orange foil 50/50 auto relic redemption card yet. After he signs it and I receive it, I'll post it in here and hopefully he's mashing again and we are all happy.
