**Official Luka Doncic Thread**

Congrats to Luka and the Mavs. I've been in this thread saying for years (you can do the advanced search) that he needed to change the way he plays in order for Dallas to be successful. He's always been a great player, it's not "hating" to critique how such a talented player needed to change his game, it's just honesty.

There were a couple of areas of improvement which really stood out.

#1 - Lower usage rate. This cannot be overstated. I'm not sure if his knee injury was the unexpected reason for this but when I saw how the Mavs were using him in the LAC and OKC series, it was clear how much more smooth and free the offense was. And even though he looks to be close to 100%, he's not dominating the ball as much and has allowed Kyrie to take over during stretches.

#2 - The mid-season trade for Gafford. The Mavs didn't go 21-3 down the stretch because Luka turned it on, they won 88% of their games because their defense improved by leaps and bounds once they could rotate two 7-footers on the court.

#3 - Kyrie has been a monster. As much of a beast as Luka has been, he's always been a monster offensively. Kyrie has stepped up and has turned it on when needed. He's turned out to be a great investment for Cuban.

The Boston series is going to present challenges the Mavs haven't seen though, with the biggest being Holiday guarding Kyrie. He's the best on-the-ball defender in the league and it's not really close. Second is that the Celtics are not going to allow Luka to take a break on the defensive end. They have versatile wings that Boston will create action with and force Luka to chase and drain his energy. The Celtics must absolutely execute to perfection because Dallas' defense is legit and they really don't have a great answer for Luka or Gafford/Lively defensively. They better pray Porzingis is close to 90%. Should be a great series.

his hype prices in the past 48 hours have finally hit the market prices at which i bought him at in jan 2023 . i think even a championship will cause post finals prices to settle below these Finals hype prices, no?

The whole market is sliding downward and championships were priced in to begin with so it isn't super surprising.

If he gets a ring this year it basically gets him back on schedule for what people hoped he could do in the first place. I felt like he was at an inflection point. If they bounced out of the playoffs this year I think his cards would have been sliding downward a bit. Another playoff exit next year would have accelerated the slide. Luckily they have been putting in work this season. Those mid-season moves totally reinvigorated everything.

Those Blue Contenders Optic Autos are his best looking rookie autos by a mile in my opinion. Congrats on a great group of cards!

So, funny story:

Back in 2018, I had just moved out to the Phoenix area for grad school. Soon after, the Cardinals drafted Josh Rosen and my hometown Mavs acquired Luka Doncic.

As a "wise" collector who had made plenty of mistakes in the past buying rookies when they're prices were high and then watching those prices inevitably came back down to earth, I made the "smart" decision to pass on Doncic's card and wait until his second or third year to start a collection.

In the meantime, I wanted to give my new city's team a chance and started picking up Rosen cards.

Today I have a massive Rosen collection and three Luka cards.

Go Mavs!!!

So I decided to bust the safe open and refresh my memory of what Luka I stashed away during his RC year. No way I could afford many of these now. Funny that someone mentioned Luckyshow as his thread really upped my attention to watch Luka and then I became hooked. I hope he can bag the ring and mvp this year, they’re playing great and beating the best team would def silence some critics… go mavs!

Thanks, I was fortunate enough to be able to pull that many Luka auto cards, cause I wasn't able to convince myself of spending the kind of money at that time to buy one.

I mentioned him cause I'm curious whether he still have them or sold them at the peak or something else. I would love to follow along and speculate on Luka, but it was too pricey for me.

@lion2120 (or anyone who knows), from what series is the white card on row 2, far right, with the V in the top right corner? Again, all great cards but I really like the look of that one.

That's Vanguard from Panini Chronicles. The Gold version is awesome looking as well. Kicking myself for not picking one of those up when I had the opportunity
