I was tempted to raise an issue with the Chang Gibson I received yesterday but I don't think I will. It looked like it had a bit of residue inside the case, almost like tobacco specs or something. But looking more closely I noticed the specs cast shadows on the card, so they are either stuck to or embedded in the case. I thought air bubbles, maybe, but I think they'd look more blackish than brown if that were the case. There's also a greyish speck on one of the edges. These are regular thickness cards, right? The cases make them look super thick.

Anyway, I think a five star seller would disclose this on a card going for a premium, but I don't doubt it is as it was received from Topps. Seller only had picture of the card front in the listing. So, technically as described I guess. I'm more of a mind to try swapping the case than haggle with the seller over it.

absolutely. i have only picked up a few and all except Baller Gooden came from Topps. i suppose i regret that price, but it was only $40. i consider that my penalty for not paying attention and missing it.

i don't know, they are fun and i generally like the idea. beyond that, i can grab a card i like for less than $20 or so instead of getting some small percentage of a blaster i can't even find and rolling the dice on some hit. sometimes it is just nice to grab something you like.


EDIT: i will add, i think Topps getting crappy with the packaging and delivery and the random "what case will i get this time game" is a bunch of garbage. protect my shipment. give me the box. give me the case. i can see some issues for them going forward with all of this.

Not sure if this has been addressed yet, but two of Chang’s cards have a really interesting and downright dastardly easter egg to decode (at least for me).

1. On her Ichiro card, what does .625 refer to at the top?

-I scoured his stats. Like a deep-dive-on-Fangraphs scour. Nothing.

Ignoring the decimal point:

-His 2001 Topps card number was 726. 627 in reverse is close, but c’mon now.

-He never had 625 AB in a season, but did notch 629 in 2012. Not sure what to do with that info, so moving right along.

-Seattle’s area code is 206. No US area code is 625, but Pasadena, CA is 626 (who knew?).

-His 117 career HR is tied for 750th all-time (with Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker no less!)

-His birthday is Oct 22nd, not June 25 (6-25)

I am totally flummoxed and must know the answer!!! Anyone?

-Like Ichiro, I scoured his stats. No other instance of .330 that I see during his big league career...although he did bat .330 in the 1959-60 winter league in Puerto Rico. Doubtful that’s what Chang had in mind, either. If it is, well played Sophia. Well played.

I‘m an instant fan of Chang’s work because of this clever feature. She did say on Blake’s interview that she really researched the players before designing her card because she isn’t really a big baseball fan and needed to know more about each subject. So awesome. Wish her other 4 had this (Mo, Jackie, Gibson, Mays), but here’s hoping more mystery numbers make an appearance on her remaining cards.

Anyway, I love following all the highs/lows/more lows and soaking in the unbridled emotion toward the set thus far! No matter how P2020 shakes out, it’s a ride we won’t soon forget.

Plan to focus on a Taylor/Thiele/Koufax run, but no rush at this point.

Probably too many words for a first post. Sorry but not terribly!

You did a lot of work on the Ichiro but didn’t google “Ichiro” and “.625”? The number two result is a discussion in this very thread. Could be a reference to his batting average with RISP rookie season.

Good luck. Got a return request from him today for the "2020 packaging being scuffed". It doesn't matter if you accept returns or not, you will have to give them a refund.

It does matter if you accept returns or not..you still have a chance to win the case if you dont accept..it's not a guarantee but it's still a chance
