What do they do well?

If you actually watch the games then answer is yes their defense is very good. They were pretty elite before they lost their two best players. It's a team game and what the offense is doing obviously effects the defense. The Pats offense is 2nd to last in time of possession. No defense is going to be pitching shut outs when they are on the field the entire game.

My wife is a Pats fan so the game is on every week. I have seen plenty of games and was never impressed by anything so that was why I was genuinely asking. I’ve not seen anything and the stats don’t suggest anything - though I’m no knee deep into the day to day of the team and what is going on.

But all you gave me was excuses for why the stats aren’t good. What do they do well?

Honestly they do everything well. Now that they are playing with 3rd string DBs it's not as good but probably better then 90% of the teams would do with the same personnel. If you watched all the games then you'd see that even games where they gave up 30 points most of that is in the second half after the defense has been gassed by being on the field the entire game. Vs Eagles they held Hurts to 207 total yards and Brown to 79 yards and no TD. First Dolphins game they held Hill to 40 yards. Cowboys they held Pollard to 60 total yards and CeeDee to 48 total yards. The Saints game where they lost 34-0 they held Kamara under 100 yards and Carr under 200 yards. They held Allen to 283 total yards and Diggs to 58 yards. The Pats are a bad team with a lot of problems but the defense isn't one of them. A lot of the points they have given up have been on Pick 6s and because the other offense keep getting short fields becasue of Mac

I'm sure he cares but he's just not good. And the way he's handled himself on and off the field for the past two years has been embarrassing. But he should look on the bright side. The Pats shouldn't be trying to win games at this point and I'd argue benching him yesterday was a statement that they thought he had a better chance at winning that game at the end then Zappe did.

Maybe Mac Jones is just the most recent Sam Darnold, or Baker Mayfield. First rounders occasionally bust. Can they still be a QB in the NFL? Sure, but maybe it’s as. Backup. Or it’s like Baker on 4 teams in 3 years but it’s not franchise starter someplace. Maybe Mac Jones will catch on somewhere and reset but seems clear he’s done in New England

The slander of Baker is incredible. Man has a playoff win, more than Mac.

He's not elite but can definitely be a capable starting QB in the league. He's playing incredibly well this year for Tampa.

Mac's comp is a less talented Carson Wentz due to his attitude and ability to alienate the locker room and everyone in the organization. But amazingly, Wentz just got another job. I'm sure Mac will get a back up job with a chance to compete for starter somewhere but if he'll probably burn some more bridges wherever he goes
