On the coaching staff hot stove, Baltimore just hired Drew French, Atlanta's bullpen coach, as their new pitching coach.

Atlanta has a lot of coaches to replace

Looking at this list, it's doubtful.

A 33 year old with a high WHIP, low K rate, possible starter if an injury happens, with a "decent" ground ball rate gets a $26million 2 year deal? Is this really what an average at best reliever is going for or did the Reds seriously overvalue/overpay this guy?

This one’s a bit puzzling. Between Martinez and Pagan, they’ve maybe bolstered their pitching a little, but they haven’t exactly become top contenders.

Maybe they’re planning another move.

I don’t know if I’d say that a 90th percentile GB% is just decent. Sounds like a guy that’s perfect for GABP to me.

(I read this via App but Google browser search brought up last winter’s article)

What day is the Rule 5 draft? Does that usually accelerate the deal making, afterwards, when a team can then risk making cuts in the 40 man again? My team has been trying to scrounge -from- Rule 5 for so long I forgot how things start to work once that is over.

Ahh, thanks. Google landed me on the older one when I went to get the link. I read the current one via News app today.

So ifn you wanna read last February’s take on the same idea, read the one in the quote. Otherwise ignore that one.

I was just thinking about the pre-5-draft moves and the decision point to make sure certain players are protected. Once the draft is over, do teams take more risk waiving players on the 40 man? All of that is more about the ‘churn’ of fringe players, not signings of veteran Free Agents destined for the 26 man roster. So you cut minor league guy #40 to go sign another vet. Just wondering what the difference is with waiving a player after Rule 5, hadn’t pondered that before. Most such players usually end up signing minor league deals with the same club.

So my team has already added 2 players, before the meetings. That’s 2 roster spots committed and thus 2 less players they can protect on the 40. I have been wondering if that would make them wait till the draft is over before moving on to whatever their next project. Things are different in AAAA league I guess.

My hunch is Mayo is a key piece of any trades the Os make. Bright future, but may not fit with their roster window.

Whew! Looks like the Red Sox have bowed out of the Ohtani contract blood bath competition. Dodged a bullet there, I think

Morosi - Shohei Ohtani is likely to decide on a team within the next week, according to one source engaged with the top end of the free-agent market.
