PSA Cert #41004601

1955 Parkhurst Wrestling Bronko Nagurski #97 - Population 1 of 1 - Just One Graded Higher

Value gain of $602.47

This card was purchased by an unknown bidder (same PSA sub as other Moser/PWCC cards) from Mile High Auctions as a PSA-7 on March 22, 2018 for $433.65. VCP link: http://www.vintagecardprices.com/car...grd=7&grdr=PSA
Same card was sold by PWCC as a PSA-7.5 for $1,036.12 on October 29, 2018. PWCC Marketplace link: https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1820732

A subpoena would identify the buyer from Mile High Auctions. The card was later graded at PSA in the same submission as other Moser proven altered cards.

From the PWCC PSA 7.5 listing description: "This beauty looks like it recently fell out of a pack and boasts four sharp corners, crisp edges and strong card stock."

Yellow circles are print and fiber identifiers.
Red squares identify trimming of both the left and right edges. Before the trimming the card's image was uneven. After trimming the borders and image are centered and even.

PSA Cert #41004609

1953 Parkhurst Gordie Howe #50 - Another Moser card gets a sticker from Brent

Value gain of $498.00

This card was purchased by whitman111 (Gary Moser) from Ebay seller triplesssinc as a PSA-5.5 on April 09, 2018 for $355.00. Worthpoint link: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...owe-1922700612
Same card was sold by PWCC as a PSA-5.5 for $853.00 on October 28, 2018. PWCC Marketplace link: https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1818929

From the PWCC listing description: "Huh? When we look at this card it quickly becomes apparent that this is a world class example, and the grade doesn't seem to align with the eye appeal. This card could have graded an '8' and we'd still consider it exceptional for the grade. Bright and fresh throughout with four strong NM-MT corners and great print for the issue."

Brent seems distraught that after all that work it didn't get a grade bump...

Yellow circles are print and fiber identifiers.
Red squares identify trimming of both the left and right edges and an attempt to get rid of the brown stain on the back.

Definitely looked better pre-op.

I love when PWCC calls something Pop 1 when there are higher grades available.

That one hurts, I would have loved to own that original card. Plus now I have to watch out for that 5.5. I know they were hoping for more of a bump but now I don’t know if I’ll ever complete my 1953 parkhurst set. They really targeted that set. I might just go low grade raw to avoid the whole mess. At least I didn’t try and complete the 1948 leaf set.

SGC Cert #:2520328

1909-11 T206 Piedmont Ty Cobb Red Portrait SGC 3 to SGC 6.5

Sold on 8/4/2017 as a SGC 3 by Huggins & Scott Auctions to an unknown buyer for $2,600.00
Consigned to PWCC and sold on 1/3/2019 as a SGC 6.5 for $16,158.00
Value gain of $13,558.00!

This Ty Cobb Red Portrait is unnaturally white for a T206. It is surprising to me that SGC did not catch this bleaching, as it is the most ghastly color I've seen on a T206 Cobb. Although the buyer of the card from Huggins & Scott is unknown at this time, it bears all the hallmarks of many of the other altered cards that have been laundered through PWCC. Namely, it has been bathed in a chemical whitening solution and one of the corners has been trimmed down. In the last photo, a close-up detail of the Piedmont back, you can see the upper left corner has a small crease. The card doctor trimmed the corner down to lessen the appearance of the crease. The crease instead blends into the more rounded corner.

Blue rectangle on the front shows the corner that was trimmed down, and the large print spot that was removed. The red circles on back are paper fibers and print defects shared in the two photos, proving it is the same card. The red arrow in the third photo points to the crease, which you can see is virtually gone in the "after" photo to its right.

So far the bulk of Moser altered cards reside in PSA holders however some of the greatest gains have sadly been from altered cards in SGC holders. It is harder to track down the SGC graded examples but my guess is there are lots more out there. Good find, again.

What's going to happen to all these altered cards?

I have a feeling unless they're re-slabbed or taken off the market, there is a risk they'll pop up again with a different slab and cert number.

Most will stay with their owners, honestly, because most won't know anything is going on. Or will be reassured they're fine.

The bleached ones will probably all fade over time. And all people will be left with is a literal piece of cardboard in a 50 cent piece of plastic.

Those owners may not willingly send the card back to PSA/SGC/BVG to have it slabbed as "Authentic Altered," but may instead crack the card out to remove the tainted cert # and have a new one issued.

Has anyone ever been reimbursed by a TPG for cases like this? The only way I see these coming off the market is for the grading companies to issue financial compensation and have the cards returned and re-graded.

That Cobb looks awful. It is sad that so many collectors can't see the difference.
I guess Brent's "investors" will buy anything.

Looks like a cheap reprint.
