Mike Bacsik, Former Major League pitcher (gave up Bonds #756!) and current Rangers broadcaster, made a good point on our live youtube show this week when we were discussing this topic. He said that it's near impossible to think it could happen again because a player's bat and arm do not develop at the same time/rate -- especially to get to the elite rate needed to make the big leagues doing either.

He said, what happens if the two-way player's major league-ready bat develops first? He can't hit in the majors and still work on his pitching game in the minors or vice-versa. Seems like it was a perfect storm for Ohtani, and maybe it was how the game is played/set-up in Japan that allowed his unique dual development to take place? So that by the time he came to the US, six+ years into his career, he could do both at the elite level needed to play and stay (and thrive!) in the Bigs.

Just something to consider as we watch this absolute unicorn.

Just never forget that Shohei was supposed to be the next Brendan McKay!

People will hype, hope, and lie to themselves to believe what they want to. End result is all that matters and this outcome is damn near impossible to replicate.

As you said, a perfect storm - A butterfly effect started by his 1st professional team, the NipponHam Fighters.

I mean just look at Jac Caglinone...his bat I think is a good bit better than his arm and he really struggled in his first go at the majors with the bat. Hunter Greene was also talked about as having two way ability and while he's been awesome, it's been a fight to keep him healthy on the mound.

It's unbelievable that Bacsik has a job. He made a very public incredibly racist comment about 10 years ago.

Perhaps not as a television analyst. Just ask Glen Kuiper and Thom Brennaman.

Not sure if this has been shared before...a pre MLB interview with Ohtani...including a bit (around the 9:50 mark) about how the Nippon Ham Fighters allowed him to develop as both a hitter and a pitcher.

It's wild that people in this thread keep calling Ohtani the GOAT and comparing him to Tom Brady.

If Ohtani is so great -- which he is -- there is no reason to make up such absurd comparisons to pump him up.

Tom Brady didn't even reach GOAT status until late in his career after he won his 6th and 7th Super Bowls. The debate had still been Joe Montana versus Tom Brady and how much Bill Belichick had been responsible for the Patriots' success.

Also, the GOAT of MLB is either Babe Ruth or Willie Mays, and that's not changing -- sorry to burst your bubble. And Ohtani is not going to match Mickey Mantle's 7 championships.

You are spot on about the REALIZATION of Brady being the GOAT. It was always there, but we didn’t truly realize it until Tampa.

Ohtani is beginning the same pathway. He very well may be on his pathway to GOAT status, and the realization just hasn’t set in. This I think is where the comparison comes in.

Right now I’m with you on your Ruth Mays assessment.

Recent pickup, I love the look of this even though it's non RC and non dodgers. Probably thinking of crossing it to BGS or PSA

I think it's really just a semantics argument at this point. Ohtani is doing something that no one has or maybe will ever do again. If people want to classify him as the GOAT for that, it's OK. And if you disagree, that's OK too.

These are by far the highest numbers. Even higher than 2021 mania.
