Personally, I don't feel the need to have the card and I imagine collectors feel the same way, which is why it hasn't grown in the same way as other 2018 cards. But, I am open to hearing any other reason. I feel like it's a card I should eventually own, but whenever I look at the price, I feel like I am not missing out and can always buy it later.

I was just thinking about this the other day, was surprised at the price on that, might be a good time to pick it up honestly. Maybe it is getting overlooked?

Haha, nothing like that. It's more niche. I didn't want to chase any bright blue trains that have already left the station. I instead ran after and clung onto a few smaller cargo trains instead.

How many Ohtani autos do you currently have or do you keep trading them in for more desirable ones?

60-70. Like any collection, there are some never for sale, some only for sale if a must-have card appears, and ones that are expendable for the right price. 80% are in the first two groups.

You've kind of summed it up by saying that you don't feel the need to have the card, and collectors feel the same way. The short list of reasons why the card isn't growing IMO are as follows:

-Based off pop reports from PSA and BGS, there are at least 7000+ copies of the card that exist (graded and non-graded). There's probably about 50 available on eBay at any time that aren't going anywhere. Supply is way over demand.
-Bowman 1st card: Yes, it is his first card printed by Topps/Bowman, but it doesn't show him in an MLB jersey, it's a WBC I believe. This can't be overstated, and is the main reason why this card will always fall short. It lives in an a purgatory where it doesn't appeal to those collecting his true Japanese RCs and those collecting his MLB RC/Prospect cards.
-The "Mojo" Refractor look has never been visually appealing to collectors.
-There are many cards out there in this price range with deeper value.

All that being said, buy what you like!

Is it possible the casual collector is unaware of this card?
I agree, but batting pose + MLB uniform makes a big difference to people I think.

You can find these little fellas relatively cheap, and they grade well

The pinks with the red jersey are easy on the eyes.

Saw this at the Philly card show today. Guy had it listed for $50k. IP auto of a base card, but damn that gold auto looked pretty fine. He had no interest in my 50/50 relic auto though so couldn't even contemplate a deal.

Boggles my mind when people ask for pack-pulled BCA prices on an IP auto. There is serious delusion when they point to the RC logo.

Outside of the price, that is a good looking baseball card. The gold ink on black A&G X card stock is sharp. Cant imagine there is another black/gold in existence given its IP and with the earlier signature.

Pop reports on his rookie ip autos are crazy low compared to other ultra modern guys.

50k seems insanely high for that.

1) That card wasn't signed his rookie year, 2) The ceiling price an IP auto should ever reach is the price of an authenticated signed ball which is $3-5K, which should already reflect the scarcity of the IP auto market, 3) There is always allowance for a special signed card to go higher, but not 10x unless it's kanji.

The market doesn’t care what you think the ceiling price should be. Here’s a hideous sticker auto pulled from a leaf product in a junk slab. What do you think the PSA 10 10 POP 1 2018 Bowman Chrome IP Auto would do at auction? I’d take the over.
