A lot of you are way more engrained into Ohtani stuff than I am. But I cant find any reason to desire the 50/50 set. It just seems like a set that won’t age super well. I kind of buy ‘what I like’ and that set, idk, just seems like such a novelty type product. Obviously an Ohtani auto from it is sweet…but the parallels and base do nothing for me.

Are there any other reasons for the BC 1 demand given the relatively high pop?
BC 1 has him in an Angels uniform, Mega 17 Japanese uniform. That makes a big difference too IMO.

Look at basketball cards. Cooper Flagg Mavs cards are worth waaaaay more than his Bowman 1st Duke cards, and even more over his high school McD's All American cards. Lots of collectors just shun any cards where they aren't in MLB (or NBA) uniforms.

Honestly, if you don't have one of the autos or auto relics (the relic only cards are cool too), it's all about HR #50 and the parallels. Most people won't crave after even a gold /50 of HR #34 or SB #48, but people are going crazy over the HR #50 cards.

HR #50 cards are literally going for over 10x any other of his other base set cards, with maybe a couple exceptions.

Incidentally I am finally learning to fully embrace the fine 9, which may elate or horrify you. But with prices the way they are it's very tempting to sell my 10s, buy 9s (where possible) and pocket the difference.

9’a are awful.

They suck.

Stay out of my kitchen.

And, welcome to the club.

Paid $220 for these in 2021.

You’re awesome, $ean!

That was a great pickup and those were some good times. And if you think I am bitter - you just haven’t been paying much attention.

I have looked, and looked again, but as a set/run/vertical collector it’s a rabbit hole that I am not sure that I want to go down.

I can’t do just one card of a set.

Even your response is Troll like. You don't have to think I am awesome and you can disagree with my arguments, but you must admit, I don't troll people as a response to their arguments/opinions.

I think had history of sports world played out differently, this may not be a thing.

-1985 Topps McGwire: had he not done roids, that's one more highly desirable top grade card that sets precedent for non team uniform
-1992 Topps Traded Nomar: Same
-2005 Bowman Chrome Aflac Justin Upton: had he been the clean Arod Peter Gammons said he would be
-Bryce Harper falls into this category in a number of ways, but probably the confusion of having "too many" top tier non team uniform "rookies" hurts him. 2008 UD Triple Patch Auto /5 - too niche. 2010 Bowman Aflac, when the Aflac pre rookies were a hot commodity. 2010 Bowman Chrome USA in general where PSA 10s outsell the 2011 B w/ C 1st 10 by a wide margin

History of "rules" is always fun to look at

Right- Mega 17 is clearly a WBC card, so it's really a double whammy with the pitching image and no MLB.

Things could still change over the years, especially if the WBC grows in importance, but I'd still place my bets on BC 1.

Think it's pretty clear a lot more people have gotten over the "non-MLB" uniform stigma for Ohtani, and have started to go in on his 2013 BBM cards. Hence, the price spikes recently.

Here's Exhibit #1. LOL

At this point you can make a lot of arguments for which Ohtani card the hobby should flock to because he doesn't have a BC 1st. From my perspective the 2017 Bowman Mega is more like a BC 1st as it was his first pack pulled licensed card in the US. It also is a SP and I have seen the PR estimates from 4500-6500. In comparison the 2018 Bowman chrome #1 has a nice batting image of him. I am not sure what the print run is, but it is higher than the 2017 Bowman Mega.

At this point the market has spoken, but from my view it seems like it should be the opposite when it comes to desirability and price.

Back in 2020...

Me: Dear Magic 8 ball, should I buy Japanese BBM Ohtani cards?

Lying 8 ball: My sources say no

If anyone has a lead on a Sapphire 18 Ohtani outside of eBay lmk. I’m looking for either a really nice raw one to buy or a trade/purchase for a PSA 10. Unfortunately not being on Facebook handicaps me some when looking.

So maybe those 2013 BBMs make the Mega 17 look more like a 4th/5th year Japanese card than a pre-rookie or first bowman or whatever.

A nice 2013 BBM #183 Red wing in a PSA 8 ends in about 9 hours and 30 min or so.

It's currently at $2774....

Will be interesting to see where it ends!

I think it's safe to say that his Japanese rookies are no long have the stigma that they used to and rightly so.

Last PSA 8 sold for $2,225, so it's already blasted past that sale. Won't be shocked to see it end over $3k.

big money in this thread!

Good luck with the grades, Geoff!

Sean - NYRE2PECT is as genuine as they come. We tease you sometimes, but the regulars here have inside jokes that we poke fun at (e.g. TBP's superfluous stock phrases, Michael's base binder collection, etc.) Sorry if it comes off as mean.

Trueblue-Thanks for the shout out. I try to be genuine on this thread and help answer questions from those that are new collectors of Ohtani. In general this is the best thread around!

I totally get people making fun of me for the questions I ask, but as someone that only collects baseball since Covid and buys cards for fun I am just trying to understand the market dynamics of Ohtani, because I can't draw from prior experience of collecting other players during modern collecting (I collected as a kid in the junk wax era).

I know TBT teases me as $ean, because I ask a lot about value, but I might be the only one on here that is not trying to make money off my cards. I don't grade my cards because I have no intentions of selling (which if I cared about maximizing profits I would have done this), and I am not trying to sell my Ohtani cards at peak to make money to put into anything else.

I just didn't see the need for NYRE2PECT to troll me (I don't troll other people on this thread). I am never trying to pump cards I buy to sell. I have no horse in the race of 2017 Bowman Mega vs 2018 BC #1 as I said before...I have exactly 2 copies of each.

I am just trying to collect Ohtani and have fun like everyone else. Yes money and value are tied together...but I am not buying, grading, pumping, selling rinse and repeat type of guy. Thats all.
