Geoff Wilson and the Sports Card Investor crew are visiting ddearing this morning

He just looked at me and said, “the hobby is dead, tell your friends”

I am praying that gets used in a video

I’m dying laughing

Good times at the Bangor Maine elk's club show today. Attendance was brisk, but I didn't see any major transactions taking place. Nice mix of vintage at this show.

Modern was all around too. The Robinson looked pretty good compared to the grade.

Plenty of pelican holders in attendance as well as Pokemon. My one pick-up. CJ Stroud certified radical rookies case hit. Rumored to number 15. Only one has sold on eBay thus far for $436 in November. I was happy to grab it graded.

Not a pelican case. And is that guy behind the table wearing a fur hat?

probably six or seven tables selling retail pokemon. Several tables selling blasters/megas of the major sports-----no one buying retail that I saw.

With Fanatics and the big three hoarding all the hobby, this is what happens. These guys have a monopoly on the good stuff

Modern retail is pretty available everywhere for more or less MSRP, no need to pay a premium for it.

I just can’t believe people actually still buy retail to flip.

I was trying to make a sale off eBay to a potential buyer earlier this week.

The buyer countered with a sale "comp" earlier this month.

I'm currently the cheapest listed on eBay by a significant margin, and the next cheapest after me doesn't have an OBO offer available.

I basically knocked 25+% off my eBay ask for the live transaction, which would put me between the most recent sale "comp" and my current listing and the buyer wasn't interested.

It's not like the card is one that sells daily either.

I really wanted to use this line on the buyer, but I've learned to bite my tongue and gotten better with Customer Service.

Agree, but Upper Deck Series 2 has his most desirable RC, Young Guns and for hobby, there is already a 2 million bounty for the Gold Outburst You g Guns 1/1. His outburst silver will be in retail as the big chase card. His YG will likely be a $500 card out the gate.

That will drive retail flipping. I will not be “flipping” but I will be looking to pick up megas in my rural area where hockey is not purchased.

Default Observations on the current state of the hobby from a show this weekend

Geoff Wilson was spending heavy in Philly

Probably more than the rest of the dealers combined

Much better day today. Very good attendance and people were spending money. Talked to several dealers and they said today blew Friday out of the water. Crowd still strong here at 4 o’clock. I’d say Dan had a good show.

Finances of a collector who traveled from Virginia to Philadelphia for the show this weekend

All prices are rounded up to the nearest dollar

12/1/2023
Breakfast, coffee, granola bars: $15
Philadelphia Museum of Art admission: $26
Lunch: $21
Parking: $20
WaWa Coffee: $2
SGC shipping: $15, given a promo code for the submission itself for previous issues
Cards: $550
Tolls: $28
Dinner and beer: covered by dealer friend, a good egg

12/2/2023
Hotel: $140
Gas: $30
Breakfast, coffee, snacks: $17
Lunch, snacks, coffee: $18
Tolls: $4, Waze took me an interesting way back. There were two bad accidents and I got rerouted through some rural Pennsylvania and Maryland towns

Total Expenses: $885
Expected Profits: $0

In the hole $885 might be insane for a single 24 hour span, but it is worth it to me for the following reasons...

Dealer Friends Interacted With: 11

Twitter/Instagram/Blowout/YouTube Friends Interacted With: 8

Paintings Seen From the Masters: 50+

The Hobby is dying bro!
