I fully recognize the nuance and distinctions between the deceased in both cases.

My larger point was the general reaction by both botnets. That someone can so easily be disqualified from both basic human dignity and access to emergency services.

The NBA isn't a powerful enough organization to force the government into enacting policy, but they have the platform to raise awareness on a variety of issues whether some feel it's being handled skillfully or not.

I think the idea of self infliction plays an important role here. If two men are standing outside and a tree falls and kills each of them, I will be much more sympathetic to the man who did nothing vs. the man who cut down the tree.

Tangible steps include things like:

- Ensuring that police forces are (fairly) representative of their communities.

- Body cams coupled with responsible journalistic reporting and use of that footage.

- Reviewing department stockpiles of military munitions and either establishing federal guidelines for what is allowed in individual departments or at least making it crystal clear who at the local level is responsible for "militarization" of local police forces.

- Making sure that protests and any violence are only initiated when it is clear that an officer is not receiving oversight, accountability, or prosecution for their use of deadly force against a POC—not as the automatic response to every instance where a POC is shot.

- If these protests were focused entirely on Taylor's case, you'd have 99% of America on their side. There has been no justice in that case. The Floyd protests/riots produce some division because the officers have been arrested and are facing trial. Justice is being carried out. The subsequent protests, sparking off the very first reports of anyone being shot, have completely jumped the shark.

So we’re finally going to have that long-awaited national dialogue? Do you think they’ll hold out until that’s scheduled or until after it’s over?

See, now you're giving me an opportunity score points with our liberal friends because I'm going to disagree and say they were both idiots (to varying degrees) and our quickness to revoke human decency from people who end up paying with their lives from a mistake is to play a dangerous game.

(I realize neither side is really in the habit of giving out points. It's a zero-sum, all-or-nothing game for most people. )

If the Raptors-Celtics opening game/s are boycotted it will only be because they're conveniently ahead of the schedule of the rest of the playoff teams.

I doubt the league boycotts a single game though.

Or is there dialog that needs to happen and policing policy changes that need to happen. It's not radical to demand police stop killing people. I keep banging my head against why nothing is happening, why no change, no talks from a governmental level. The protests aren't getting less violent and more videos are inevitably going to keep surfacing, a person dies everyday as a result of police interactions. This is an ongoing problem, even if all police shootings are justified, the resulting protests are a problem.

Is it unreasonable to believe Trump is letting cities flounder, stoking violence, perpetuating riots for political end. It's definitely galvanizing his base and turning away moderates from BLM's message. I just don't understand why there's not a clearer effort to talk towards policy changes.
When Trump wants to send guardsmen in to break up riots, he'd a violent dictator. Now he's 'letting cities flounder'. Lose lose.

Our kids and grandkids will tell us of reading in their history books where the Toronto Raptors not playing Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals changed the world for the better.

Fred Van Vleet seems to have his heart in the right place, though.

Biased in what way?

Because I painted the NBA as what it is, a product sold to consumers?

Please make some sort of point.

I gave two simple arguments on how to handle the current protests.
1) Policing is fine, let’s get the protests under control with harsher tactics
Or 2) Things need to change and let’s talk about this and find a resolution.

Trump’s actions were towards argument 1. He was vilified for harsher tactics so now has no problem seeing things escalate. Which in turn has given him more leverage to enforce harsher tactics. His ultimate goal. Lose win

If he took honest steps towards argument 2 and was further called a violent dictator, that’s lose lose

Your response was that you hated my sentiment. I only asked a question regarding what the appropriate avenues were for political discourse.

Yes the NBA is a business. I have no counterpoint to that. It's a plain fact.

I agree that in the totality of the action, two human lives were lost, and that is very sad. But I'm lying if I don't tell you I view them differently. You can roll me back to the thread the death of Oscar Taveras. The death of his girlfriend is a terrible tragedy and I had sorrow for her family. For Taveras, not so much.

I think if he were to talk about the most effective resolution, it would be to not break the law and put yourself in these positions as a civilian, and to listen to police if you do. But no one wants to hear that.
