I think he will go back to Tacoma when they return to Seattle if he doesn't start mashing soon.

I’m not giving up on him, but I do think he needs to go back to AAA to get his groove back.

The bigs are hard and it makes you appreciate how crazy the talent of Tatis, Soto, Acuna to be able to produce from day one. This is kind of the norm and I'm sure Kelenic will be fine long term.

Yeah but has his ceiling changed? From hyped up to be a superstar to merely just another decent player who will not be a hobby star?

Tools don't change from ~100 ABs. It's always the translation of tools to skills that changes outlook and I don't see anything long term in Kelenic that screams "brick wall." He just looks overmatched from velo/spin and uncomfortable. See Jo Adell - he's trending back up after his trial by fire. Also, see trout's first year, he looked terrible too - but he ended up okay I guess. Or he can become Delmon Young. Welcome to prospecting.

If you believe so, then sell and sell fast. If not, buy, and buy hard. I’m holding.

I enjoy prospecting. I can’t afford a player’s nice cards once they break out, and I love following the minor leagues, so I go prospecting. Especially for my Marlins! It’s great because once a prospect gets traded to the Marlins his prices immediately drop!

Strong hold that may approach buy zone depending if the tools start translating to his performance this year or not. Never really a lock with prospecting but I think he could realistically develop into an Austin Meadows-type hitter in the big leagues.

Mariners haven't drafted well since Griffey and Ichi.

Neither ichiro nor kelenic were drafted by the Mariners. Also, they drafted arod and Felix and they were good

I think he will be fine. Most players don’t light the world on fire on their first call-up.

Also, although there have been a few times where he has looked overmatched, especially against lefties, he’s mostly just had terrible luck. He has a line drive rate of 15% which is league average, and his BABIP is something like .115. For reference, MLB average is .300.

Has there been a worse debut of a top 5 hitting prospect that you guys can remember?

Dustin ackley was pretty disappointing, but not as bad.

He has definitely had terrible luck as evidenced by his actual wOBA being 0.186 while his xwOBA is much higher at 0.263. The problem is that xwOBA is still just so so so bad. The bad luck is compounding the problem, but isn't itself the problem.

Dually noted.

Felix wasn't drafted either, he was an UDFA.

Aroid...well, who knows how legendary he would have been minus the ass injections.

Point still stands...Mariners haven't drafted well since forever.

daaaamn what does his stat line look like now?

something like 8 for 83.. batting .096

0 for around 40 ... this is just plain ridiculous, and I thought I saw one of the the worst with Jo Adell

For sure, even if he had better luck his numbers would still be poor. But I think he would look more like a guy who is just getting out of the gate slowly as opposed to “OMG this guy is horrible! I can’t believe what a bust he is! I’m selling all his cards tomorrow!”

hopefully his example gives people second thoughts about paying $500 plus for chrome autos when a player gets called up before his first mlb at bat.

I agree with your point. Hoping kelenic can still turn it around and jrod and noelvi and all the pitchers reverse the curse. But with past picks like Ryan Anderson, Jeff clement, hultzen, ackley, zunino, etc, it’s hard to not believe they’re cursed.

Agreed, but I also think their player development in the minors was pretty awful for years. Chris Taylor could barely hold a spot on the 25-man and couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat when he was here, then he gets traded to LA and becomes a solid starter. Ketel Marte was a decent prospect for us but was still very raw and a bit of a butcher at SS. He gets shipped to AZ and now look at what he’s doing. We got Haniger back in the trade so it’s not too bad, but still. Asdrubal Cabrera… ok this is just depressing so I will stop.

Point being, they have definitely whiffed on a lot of players in the draft but they also drafted some guys with big potential who flamed out in the M’s system, then flourished elsewhere.

TLDR; check out my username.
