There was a small find of these a couple decades ago.
I got this one from it.

There aren't any of these packs without tears.

I’m sure I speak for most of us when I say this little Gem is the only one I’ve ever seen, or will see!

It's fairly obvious when seeing the photos of the before-separation and after-separation, but without that "before" photo, it can be fun to track down why certain things are the way they are.

That made me think of one example I have researched which is a Topps paper insert that came out of 1959 packs. This 'card' looks just like the 1957 card that was printed on the same card stock as the rest of the '57 baseball set, however, this is not the same card. This one is paper.

I bought this from ebay while collecting the '57 set, but when it showed up, I immediately realized it wasn't the '57 card. It was slightly smaller, made of thin paper, and it had an expiration date on the back of November 15, 1959. So what was it and why is it torn?

This page describes how they were cut:
https://www.thetoppsarchives.com/201...ping-yarn.html

Quote:
Topps must have cut these on the same machine that they used for packaging the various tattoo and gum tab issues. The rip is a byproduct of this process, most likely from the cutting stage, where I suspect a small pin held down the insert (or tattoo or gum wrapper) which would have been unspooling from a large roll while a cut was made and then the just-cut paper was dragged across the pin, leaving the rip as it moved on to the next phase of production.
Getting PSA to recognize it as '59 instead of '57 took some effort, but eventually they got it:

^^ I remember these being listed in the Beckett “Big Book” almanac when I was a kid (maybe 91-92), but I had/have never actually seen one. At that time, I think they were listed as a ‘57 insert or promo. Thanks for sharing!!

In 50 years will anyone be posting a pic of one of these? (spotted recently at Target. I did not buy any).

Kind of like the fun packs bag...because it's also a $5 value.

Interesting that the grading label says 1958 but the pack says 1959.

Hockey is over the winter so it spans two years.
Pack was made in 1958 but the hockey season
Ends in 1959 so the pack says 1959.

There is a 1979-80 OPC hockey wax case up
For auction now. The case says 1980 on it but the boxes are from 1979

In the video they made for the case while it was at BBCE, they said that Topps would mark their hockey boxes with 1979 and OPC would mark theirs 1980.

I guess this was an annual thing, I was definitely not aware....
