I guess you're unfamiliar with how this thing called 'markets' works.

If you are PWCC or Goldin right now and you are trying to forward look 10 years into the future to have sustainable and predictable earnings.... arent you worried about the affects of major loses by this current group of people? If they leave, the whole industry reverts back to 1998. How these guys arent in a room saying we need to slow down the "premier" auctions etc is beyond me. limit the pain. Its like when a fund has a run on it and isn't liquid, what do you do, you shut it down so investors cannot redeem their money all at once.

Sports collectibles will never die. These auction houses have been around for however long. They are literally raking in millions right now why would they cap themselves? Eventually everything will settle back to normal and they’ll still be doing just fine.

I actually believe its possible one of them goes under or has to restructure. What happens with ever bubble is that companies come out the other side in a lot of trouble. Bad balance sheets, overstaffed, declining profitability. My guess is of the majors, someone has to get saved in the next few years

Agreed it’s not sustainable for all of them. When it comes to limiting items in an auction they would only be losing more money the less they sell which of course reverts back to your point of killing the market. But the big players are making so much money they don’t care right now.

I think this all changes so much. The shadiness could actually get worse though.

PWCC Vault is now free. Race to the bottom strategy with vaults has started.

Grading will change... look at the price drops happening. Shipping, staffing, and all kinds of costs are increasing for graders. No profit here anymore.

Auction houses - the high end buyers are going to dry up, that means the big fees go away from their existing operating models. Does that mean they are sustainable? I doubt it.

Dealers - sitting on massive costs on their ultra modern product, - huge hits company.... means less dealers - smaller card shows.

My bet is this industry shrinks back to 2018 levels.

Agree with everything you said except for the last part. Prices won't return to 2018 levels. It's similar to everyone wishing for pre-inflation prices. Stuff will never return to those numbers. Getting back to '18 numbers is a pipedream.

2018 prices only come back if we enter another Great Depression. Possible, but very unlikely.

Yeah, essentially no chance for 3 main reasons:

- Despite the recent drop, the S&P 500 is currently $4k, for most of 2018 it was hovering around $2500.

- Even if you believe that most of the people who joined the hobby because of COVID hype have left, you have to imagine at least a decent percentage of them stayed and will continue to put liquidity into the market.

- Since 2018, Kobe passed away, Lebron won ring #4, and Steph won rings #3 and #4. Those are significant value-increasing events for 3 of the 4 Mt. Rushmore guys when it comes to basketball cards. As stupid as it sounds, you could probably even argue that The Last Dance would also count as a value-increasing event for MJ, so maybe it's actually 4/4.

My guess is that the absolute lowest possible floor for the majority of the market would be early to mid 2020 prices.

What's the future look like for graded Jordan RCs that aren't 9.5 or PSA 10?

For instance - PSA 8s go between $6500-7200 depending on eye appeal. Will these stay consistent over the next year or will they slowly lose money and could break below $6000?

Prices bottom out and stabilize for most mid/high end once majority of the covid-era flipperbois are flushed out both as sellers and buyers. You're now starting to see small glimpses of what it's like when majority of bids are true clecters and not the #rungoodlife consortium.

Most collectors don't consider inflation, either. A return to 2020 prices is still a 10+ percent drop in real value.

Alt really sped up the decline in prices, esp high end.

Some associated with Alt have been accused of doing shady things and supposedly Alt asks for a lot of personal information that ppl don't want to give in order to approve bidding.

So their audience isn't the same as PWCC or other auction houses which leads to much lower prices. But once those sales are completed, ppl use them as comps.

No BP. That was the final price.

Expect not only the PSA 10 Jordan to continue its decline, but the rest of the hobby as well.

Wow $133k sale is back to what it was selling for about 2 years ago November 2020.

I wonder why cardladder won't recognize the Alt $133k sale? It's missing from the charts and data.
