Mike Piazza was notoriously one of the worst defensive catchers in history. He didn't get the catcher's boost for playing that position.

Since MLB is all about making up "new" records, Judge is the only player in MLB history to lead in batting average, hit 50+ homeruns, and walk 120+ times.

I have no skin in the game, I’m a lifelong Red Sox fan-I just think that getting that kind of production from a catcher is worth the trade. The only stat where judge has a decisive advantage is batting average, but that is somewhat inflated due to his high BB total (which is why AB is a better metric to use than PA in that comparison). As of right now’s home/away splits judge has 96 hits on the road to Raleigh’s 82, but Raleigh has more RBIs and once again plays a position with significantly more positional value. FWIW in games played this year in Seattle, which is the hardest place to homer in the big leagues, Raleigh has 28 hr and 62 RBI to Judge’s 24 and 53 at Yankee stadium, which is the third easiest place to hit bombs in the bigs (metric used is HR factor by baseball savant). Raleigh producing like that in a nightmarish park for hitters while playing catcher is more impressive to me than what judge has done this season both home and away, especially given the fact that judge has DH’ed 56 times so far this year. Raleigh has played 33 percent more games in the field than Judge at a far tougher position and he’s leading the league in games played at catcher as well as PO (not to mention his MLB leading 60+ bombs and 125+ RBI.) Judge also has completely stopped playing center field-if he took his 92 starts in CF instead of RF there wouldn’t be nearly as wide a gap in positional value. As noted above, WAR positional adjustments for catcher are +12.5 vs -7.5 for RF and -17.5 for DH. That is a huge spread.
The positional adjustment is a guestimate and based on the perceived relative difficulty of each position and the historical hitting performance at each position. It's also based on 1,458 defensive innings played, so Raleigh's positional adjustment at catcher this season is actually +9.19 runs (1,072 innings caught; 74% of all defensive innings of the Mariners). It's offset somewhat by his 36 games played at DH, which translates to about -3.88 runs. So the net positional adjustment is about +5.31 runs.

Jayson Stark on Judge's 2025 season:

Quote:
let’s go back to 1931, when the MVP was born. Here are all the hitters in the 95 seasons since then who have led their league in OBP by 50-plus points, in slugging by 80-plus points and in OPS by at least 100 points:

Ted Williams, four times (1941-42-47-49)
Barry Bonds, four times (2001-02-03-04)
End of list!

And Ted Williams only won the MVP one of those 4 seasons...

Aaron Judge went 1 for 3 with a walk last night to lower his September OBP to .538. Fear not. He just homered again in the first to raise it back up to .540.

Add a single and 2 RBI's to Judge even though the umpire tried to screw him calling obvious balls inside as strikes.

Judge adds 2 more hits (home run and single), 1 run, 3 RBI's and is now hitting .331 after today's game.

If both the Yankees and Blue Jays win tomorrow, the Yankees will lose the division due to the tie-breaker being decided by the head-to-head record -- they were 5-8 against the Blue Jays this season.

Brutal way to lose the division -- they will still be tied for the best record in the AL.

Either way, Judge has stepped up to help his team when it has mattered most.

And to be fair to Raleigh, the Mariners clinched their division on game 158 (9/24), so all he'd be doing at this point is padding his stats. He hit .296/.412/.716 with 10 HR (0.31% cWPA) between September 1st -- when the M's were 3 games back of the division -- and September 24th -- when they clinched the division.

I still have no idea who will win the AL MVP this season -- it's a toss-up to me. The momentum has shifted to Judge in the last few days, due to him stepping up in a tight divisional race. But that doesn't mean much when it comes to a seasonal award like MVP.

The voters are stuck between a rock and a hard place -- there will be no escaping outrage from disappointed fans of the candidate who loses. This will go down as one of the very best MVP races of all time.

The Dodgers have helped Aaron a little for sure, by keeping Raleigh from the AL home run record held by Judge, which of course, is the non-cheater record. Mariners were swinging like crazy tonight, 15 strikeouts total including three for Cal and two for Suarez who is trying to get to 50. Let's see if they can shut Raleigh out one more time tomorrow, or if he can get at least one to match Maris.

Speaking of which, too bad the Dodgers couldn't keep Bonds from hitting 71-73 to set the cheater record back in 2001.
