Stage 1 of Thiele's Ripken. He's posting his process again on the FB page. I like the picture better on his first draft.

One is identifiable as Ripken, one is not.

Stage 2 is where he said the face needed more depth and it's at that point when it appears to morph away from Cal's normal look.

All caught up. I thought I missed 30 pages of discussion of and discourse on P2020 cards. Turns out I missed 28 pages on JK5 boxes. 1/400th of the set's companion card packaging. Let's move on if possible?

It just bores me to death, trying to be honest here guys. If it was a great box or a bad box, either way. It's a supplement to 1/400th of what we actually want to talk about!

Here are my hot takes:

Ziggy got banned somehow. I saw he snuck a curse word by, that might have been it. RIP bro.

Today's 2 cards -
Thiele Ripken is...... weird, and not in a good way. His face looks nothing like's Cal's, but I guess we should have seen that coming (Ted Williams Wedding Cake face, anyone?) The art is above average, the face is bad.

Siff Henderson is...... also weird, also not in a good way. His stuff is always weird. I've been his biggest critic and his biggest fan on here. He is definitely the three true outcome P2020 artist. I didn't think he could make a card that I would like less than his Nolan Ryan, but here we are. 3 pitch strikeout, all called strikes. Do not like.

Having said that, I am buying both. I learned my lesson with the Siff Ryan - hated it at first, continued to hate it, bought it, still hated it, can't stop looking at it. I'm going to give this Henderson the benefit of the doubt that maybe there's something there I will pick up on when it's in hand.

P2020 goes on - every day is a 2pac.

He should stop at stage 1. That card right there is perfect and would stack up against any Ripken in P2020. Maybe better than Siff. Less is more sometimes.

After the Thiele Williams debacle, the Thiele Mattingly debacle, the Thiele Clemente debacle and now the Thiele Ripken debacle I kind of wish I had no knowledge of what could have been.

At this point I'm just waiting to be triggered by modifications to or complete abandonment of his early Rivera card.

As the person that started the convo, I don’t regret it at all. It was interesting and included a lot of the rollercoaster and feelings that are the larger P2020 IMO. I have some the longest posts that go in to specifics of the cards and art too. I am the good and the bad of P2020. No regrets in a thread that includes a faux $1M bet.

100% agree with both these takes.

I wish I followed the comment that I alexhuntered you? No biggie, I just don't follow. I legitimately clicked past 28 pages of the 30 new, scrolling, looking for that mulleted/mustached mug, until I finally just searched your name to make sure I didn't miss a poll.

I also 100% agree I may be in for the Siff. I loved the hamburger card and went wax poetic on it, maybe even helping to convince TBP to buy one. I do not like the Rickey at first glance, but I like the junk jokes and revelations, and might need to buy one because I love me some Siff weirdness.

Hmmmmmm depth.

Possibly he wanted to make the Iron Man into an asexual everyperson, to symbolize how men and women alike celebrated someone they saw themselves in?

Not a flashy, all talk and stats type pro, Mr. Ripken. A faithful worker indeed, showing up for work and never using a sick day.

It is a call to a bygone era when folks got paid closer to their owners and had pride in being a dependable part of a greater whole.

I called my friend a sucker last year for not using his sick days. When he said he 'never calls out' he wore it like a badge of honor.

Shortly thereafter the company closed with no notice and he promptly lost all of his vacation and sick days.

There are some things from the days gone by we should bring back.

Truth you're a standout, quality contributor to the madness of 2020 overall and this set specifically.

Well jk5 may be the Star Wars fan but Thiele is clearly the George Lucas of P2020. JUST. STOP. MESSING. WITH. YOUR. ART.

I feel like half of the Thiele complaints (obvious exceptions, hence half) would be the same if he went with the first image and labeled final, and showed the final he now didn’t use and labeled it first. A lot of wanting what we can’t have IMO. I think in all of them some parts have improved and some parts have gotten worse.

I definitely prefer stage 1 Ripken over the final offering but will keep my Thiele set going.

There's nothing he's posted in his "can't have it" category that we didn't get. His cards are overdrawn. Less is more. Especially on a 2.5" x 3.5" canvas. His Jeter and Clemente would need a loupe to appreciate the detail (whcih is fine.) JK5 does detail, but somehow easier to appreciate in this medium. Ermsy's detail level is perfect for this size.

I strongly disagree.

This doesn't seem to be a matter of mild preference - his Mattingly, Clemente, Williams and Ripken are all much worse than what he previewed.

I mean you literally can’t own it as a card (I mean I guess WMH could hook you up) so yeah, you didn’t get it (at least in the physical sense I was referring to in my comment). But I agree his Jeter and Mattingly are overdone. With time I’ve come around on the Clemente, while not for me, I really appreciate the composition of it and I totally disagree with you there even if it’s not displayed in its optimal size. JK5 at a distance dissolves faster in my experience.

No one can convince me his Williams couldn’t display in any pop art section of a museum. I’ve become irrationally obsessed with the card.

The Ripken I prefer wonky looking Ripken with 1st Ripken’s background. So I like bits of both. Clemente I spoke of already, I’ve come to really enjoy the composition of that one. Mattingly is a mess to my eyes, so I can’t argue there. Mays and Ryan are great cards.
