I never know how to broach that matter during the offer process for fear of disturbing the eBay gods

There are 2290 sb so far this year. I'm guessing bbref is as of yesterday, last season there were 2486 total. We still have about 1/3 of a season left so you're looking at over 3k sb this year. True nobody other than Ruiz is near Acuna, but if you're going to compare to other seasons, you need to take it with a grain of salt. All those past players would have had more steals if the pitchers couldn't hold the runners on.

How does that compare to the yrs Rickey was running wild or any of the other 40/40 seasons?

Quick glance at yearly totals shows:

1987 with highest total at 3585
1911 second highest at 3402

Wide range of variability in between.

Stretch of 12 years over 3000 between 1982 and 1993

How many of Ronald's stolen bases had the pitcher even throwing over once to check on him? Feels like a small percentage.

I'm just saying that his season this year will be the one that future seasons are measured against unless mlb changes the rules again. Guys did run wild in the past more, but they could still be held on, the bases were smaller, etc. Maybe you could argue its akin to lowering the mound and the game hasn't really changed that much over the long term because of it. Maybe long term there isn't that much difference, but I have a hard time believing the guys from the 70s, 80s, and 90s wouldn't have stolen even more bases if they knew the pitcher couldn't throw over.

Guys like ronnie run wild in the 80s. Game was different then. Let's not overthink this.

It's simply a season that we haven't seen in 16 YEARS since Hanley went 29/51 according to the list. Additionally, that was the only time in the 2000's.

Just enjoy what he's doing as it is AWESOME!

His previous career high is 37, the rule changes have obviously had an impact. Guys tend not to steal more as they age.

baseball was different in the 80s. more emphasis was on stealing basis as compared to when he had 37. And he's only 25. Not like he's 32. Bonds was swiping bags into his 30s.

Ronnie is a 30/40 guy with a few 40/40 seaons mixed in if you transport him back 35 years ago. No doubt about it.

Who decided that last year was the standard that other years should be compared against.

That 37 came in 2019. He had a .365 OBP that year (compared to .416 this year - ie. more opportunities)

We know why he didn't have tons of steals in 2020...

We know why he didn't in 2021...

We probably know why he didn't last year...

I think your correlation analysis is spurious, at best.
