Great post, especially since Acuña was suspended/disciplined (maybe multiple times?) for not hustling.

It's great seeing anyone improve and bounce back from injury. But like you said, it's MJ-level for uber-talented players to put in the work to go from good to great to legendary.

Hopefully he keeps working every winter and adds something to his game.

I think my favorite part about the 40/70 is the Cubs announcers whining about the game being delayed for a little bit. Like the team didn't shoot themselves in the foot two straight games.

Couldn’t make up my mind on it before selling out, but got an auto. My main concern was if it was a glove Acuña was wearing during the steal.

I hope he gets a Topps Now card for breaking the modern team record for RBI.

Which was pathetic given they delayed the game just the night before so Dansby could get a standing ovation...

To me it is crazy on how low his prices are still. I was thinking his cards would have an MVP bump but they really haven't jumped crazy. Granted his stuff has been graded a ton, but Ohtani who is in more products has seen a huge upswing (and now down since he is out for the year) just this year alone.

First and foremost, you can’t compare anyone to Ohtani. Second, the card market is still in a very big correction with a ways to go. Lots of guys like Acuna have MVPs already baked in. Third, I think a lot of investors have moved on from him. They made their money on him already. It’s a lot of collectors now. There’s only so much collector money to go around while the hardcore guys have had the bigger cards for a while now.

Ronald was never suspended for not hustling. He was yelled at/disciplined by Snit a couple of times earlier on for watching what he thought were homers that didn't quite make it. This has not happened this year. He's been told not to hustle on the weak grounders/sure outs as a precaution. He's been doing what he's told in that regard even though everyone who has watched him from the beginning knows he'd rather be busting it any chance he gets. You're right though, he's improved a great deal this year, and isn't even in what are typically the prime years for most players. 50-70 is something that is possible for him while still hitting over .300.

Here’s what ZIPS future projections look like for Acuña. I don’t like ZIPS, but it seems to now like Ronny.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/40-70-is...nald-acuna-jr/

Mike Trout now shows up at the top of Acuña’s cohort list in ZiPS; literally nobody ever gets a mid-20s Trout comp. ZiPS now projects him to finish with 112 WAR, more than any active player, which includes Trout. He’s also the only current player that ZiPS projects to eclipse 600 homers, and I didn’t forget Juan Soto in that. Despite ZiPS already projecting a five-win 2024 season from Acuña, he’s at the top in positive change in projected WAR next year. If you like HR–SB clubs, ZiPS also projects a 70% chance that he joins Barry Bonds at 500–500, with 600–600 even being plausible if MLB doesn’t unring the bell on the rules that opened up the game to more stolen bases.

Whether or not Acuña is the 2023 MVP, he’s the favorite for being the MVP of the entire next decade and has a good shot at being the best position player in the era after Trout. Next to that, 40–70 almost seems boring (OK, it’s still pretty cool).

Hit, Bag, Run. Braves up 1-0 in the first. But that doesn’t matter.
