![]() I read it and JYK913’s explanation is incomplete, though I agree with what he said for the most part. He acknowledged that what he wrote may not be 100% accurate. Under his explanation, since one of the factors is age, and they’re all made of the same materials, then most of these cards should look relatively the same greening wise, but that is clearly not the case. The reason why some cards are greener than others is because they’ve been more exposed to light, air, and heat than others. Compare my card to other Kobe’s... the difference is I’m one of the few that kept this card in a black velvet envelope buried in a box, in a closed closet that I rarely turn the light on in. https://www.ebay.com/itm/254500926011 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by MPJCollector; 04-03-2020 at 03:48 AM. |

Ok, we appear to be beating a dead horse now. jyk913 theory > yours
I was laughing at you because your motive here is to promote your ebay listing. |

My eBay listing will sell itself. I was more so hoping to find pics of other BGS 10s, then I came across this thread and figured I’d help clear up the confusion. I actually think me and JYK913 are in agreement, but his explanation gives the impression that age is one of the determining factors of greening, and that is not entirely the case because some cards are clearly better than others and they’re all the same age. Does anyone know if the greening issue also affects the Youthquake insert set from 96 Chrome?

I think that they are not noting the greening when grading because there are graded copies that are greening in the holders that were perfectly fine when placed in the case.

Reminds me of old carded action figures. The clear bubbles have a large premium versus ones that are yellowed/cloudy.

The light exposure argument just doesn’t hold water IMO. I pulled mine in 96. Kept in a closet. Graded it 10 years later. Kept it in a closet. Still yellowing. All of my earlier chromes are. I’d say my Kobe has been exposed to light for about an hour total since 1996.
This is why I believe paper base will keep climbing in value over time. Because The chrome looks terrible. |

1. Does this only happen to chromes / refractors?
2. Would a base Topps Kobe be okay? 3. I'm also considering the base Bowman's Best and Finest cards, but greening makes me concerned. Thanks Thanks |

1. Greening happens to any chrome Kobe RC. 2. Base topps is fine. So is nba 50th. 3. Bowmans best and finest also have greening issues. I feel like bowmans best greens the least from what I’ve seen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No it doesn’t my base hasn’t greened or my refractor. We’re talking no greening not even a hint of it.

It can happen to any chrome base or refractor. Doesn’t mean it’s going to happen to EVERY one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

In 1996, I had a chance to buy as many Topps Chrome Kobe RC's already PSA graded 9's but opted to ride the Starbury Horse to the promised land instead, and have a dozen Stephon Marbury RC's instead, and paid the same price as what the Kobe's could have been bought for.
I have about a dozen, and at least 8 are green, and the others are varying shades, which makes me think this is some sort of "oxidation" process that's an eventuality with all of the chrome cards that year. It's that reason why I don't buy a Kobe 96 Chrome RC, in fear of the deterioration in the future. |

The consumer can then determine what level of greening is too much. |

Are there any recently graded chrome from this year that are greening and still received high grades?
