I agree with this. The stamp can’t work “both ways” if you will.

I like the near 50/50 split. That's what I figured...I'm not sure which side I favor, but it's a Topps issued, autographed US300 which is pretty cool, and it's the only one.

I wonder, is there is a Chrome Update (#HMT55) auto 1/1 in the same series?

It’s a true RC obviously. It’s also altered. The way it would be if you got a ‘51 Mantle signed. Or if Topps got it signed for you.

People have no problem calling a RC that gets signed in person a RC... not sure why it’d be different if Topps does it for you. It’s a RC signed in 2019.

The Soto is an awesome card and it doesn't really matter to anyone other than the owner (potential owner) but is it just the 2019 stamp and/or 2019 autograph, that some feel, makes this 2018 card, no longer a "rookie"?

What about rookie cards, not date stamped and presumably also not autographed during the "rookie" season.
"rookie" or not a "rookie"?

That's a sweet card. There's definitely a market for stuff like this. Look what 89 UD Griffey and 93 SP Jeter buyback autos go for (obviously not putting him on that level, just stating there's a market).

a nice example

it all has to do with the stamping - card is no longer as it was when it was originally released

Looks like a signed RC to me. Looks like Leaf had 25 of them signed.

I picked up the Baez to add it to my rainbow of his Topps flagship RC. I'm on both sides of the fence here

1. It's an original Topps Series 1 #315. I like to add TTM/IP autographs to some of my spare RC's and this saves me the trouble of hunting down Baez or paying a significant amount of money at a signing (and it's been authenticated by Topps if I ever decide to part with it)

2. I subbed this to PSA and the official registry just has the label as...

2017 Topps Archives #315
Javier Baez
Signature Series

To me it is not part of the rainbow but a great addition to a rainbow. And yes it's an RC card

The Soto would be the same if you got it graded

2019 Topps Archives
Juan Soto
Signature Series

not 2018

I'm inclined to look at it this way. You're buying a rookie card that has had something pretty cool done to it after it got printed and made as a rookie card. That thing, though, wasn't done in his rookie year, and it was done by the manufacturer for inclusion in a 2019 set.

I think it's a philosophical difference that reasonable people can disagree on. I think it's a really cool card regardless of what it is, and if I collected Soto, I would definitely want it.

The best question for you to ask is whether or not you would use this card to complete your 2018 topps update set. If yes, then you probably consider this a rookie. If no, then it definitely should not be considered a rookie.

I think it also has to do with the product and how it is released. This product is released with the understanding it is a card that was changed and put into new product, therefore it is new product. You know you are getting a card like this.

This isn’t a rookie card. It just can’t be

If it was just signed and encased by Topps, I think it would be a very cool RC. But, being stamped essentially makes it a reissue and no longer a RC. Still a cool card.

If it's a buyback yes, it's a rookie card. If it's just some back stock they had or kept purposely for stuff like this, not a rookie.

I despise Archives, but do not mind signed versions of RCs. Would like to add a certified Trout Update one day.

The stamp seals the deal, not a RC. 2019 Archives Signature Rookie Buyback would be the terminology I would use.

Sharp card though.

I just don’t get how the card can be changed because of some ink and a stamp. The card doesn’t magically get its copyright date changed on the back. It’s a signed RC card that was inserted into 2019 packs. That’s a fact.

Rookie card buyback in my opinion.

Yes Topps continuously finds new ways to blur the lines of expectations. To me it was still made in 2018. Stamp be damned. 2019 auto edition.

The hobby completely relies on logos, the stamp is a logo that supersedes all other logos on the card.
